Hillsdale baseball player Nicholas Strezo is the Bay Area News Group’s boys athlete of the week and Santa Teresa softball player Mariah Avalos is the girls athlete of the week for May 22-27.

In the boys poll, Strezo received 18,062 votes (32.63%), finishing just ahead of Acalanes track and field athlete Trevor Rogers’ 16,173 votes (29.22%). Skyline baseball player Joseph Salazar placed third.

Strezo, a senior, scattered eight hits and struck out four while pitching a complete game shutout as Hillsdale won the CCS Division V championship with a 3-0 victory over Capuchino at Excite Ballpark. The senior improved to 9-2 with a 0.72 ERA.

In the girls poll, Avalos received 11,377 votes (39.79%), finishing ahead of Live Oak softball player Dre DeJesus’ 10,887 votes (38.07%). KIPP-San Lorenzo softball player Leilani Garcia placed third.

Avalos, a junior, was a machine at the plate in Santa Teresa’s run to the CCS Division III softball title game. She went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs in a victory over The King’s Academy in the semifinal, and then was 3 for 3 and hit a home run against Everett Alvarez in the final.
