Jaylyn Sherrod isn’t ready to leave Boulder.
On Saturday, Colorado’s star point guard announced that she has decided to return to the women’s basketball team for a fifth and final season.
The NCAA granted all players from the 2020-21 season an extra year of eligibility and Sherrod has elected to take advantage.
This season, Sherrod helped to lead the Buffaloes (25-9) to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament and a third-place finish in the Pac-12. Sherrod was first-team All-Pac-12 and was named to the Pac-12’s all-defensive team for the second time.
Sherrod averaged a career-best 11.3 points per game this season. She also had career highs in total assists (167), total steals (78), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.88), field goal percentage (.409) and 3-point percentage (.309).
“Jaylyn came to Colorado four years ago with a goal and a vision to help elevate the program to a place where we could compete for a championship,” head coach JR Payne said in a release. “She believed in us as much as we believed in her and that trust has created something very special. Ultimately, Jay embodies everything we are about — toughness, grit, loyalty and a desire to be excellent in everything she does. We are beyond excited for next season.”
For her career, Sherrod has started 99 of her 106 games, including each of her last 77 games. She has averaged 9.9 points, 4.5 assists, 3.1 rebounds and 1.9 steals. She has scored 1,047 points and ranks sixth at CU in career assists (473) and 11th in steals (201). She’s one of only five players in program history with at least 1,000 points, 450 assists and 200 steals.
Sherrod has been at the heart of CU’s back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament as the point guard and emotional leader.
In the Buffs’ 87-77 loss to Iowa in the Sweet 16 on March 24, Sherrod set a Buffs’ NCAA Tournament record with nine assists.
With Sherrod coming back, the Buffs are expected to return four starters from this year’s team. Quay Miller previously announced her decision to return for a fifth season, while Frida Formann will be a senior and Aaronette Vonleh a junior.
Starting guard Tayanna Jones was the lone player on the team to exhaust her eligibility.
