Arenado reports after trade talks
Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado reported to spring training on Sunday, showing up to play for a team that spent much of the offseason trying to trade him. The eight-time All-Star and 10-time Gold Glove winner is owed $74 million for the next three seasons. The Rockies will pay the Cardinals $5 million this year, the final installment of the $51 million the Rockies agreed to pay to offset the $199 million remaining in a nine-year contract worth $275 million to finalize a trade four years ago. The Cardinals could not move him and his contract, which gives Arenado a full no-trade provision. “I’m not going to talk about who the teams were because it doesn’t really matter anymore, but so, yeah, there was about five teams, five or so,” Arenado said. “I got a family now and to be willing to pick up my family and move them, it has to be something that is worth it. So, that’s kind of why the list was fairly small, and I don’t see myself really changing that list ever.” Arenado is coming off a season that was not up to his standards, hitting .272 with 16 home runs and 71 RBIs.
Liverpool continues PL title charge
Liverpool continued its charge toward the Premier League title on Sunday with a 2-1 win against Wolverhampton. For Manchester United, it just keeps getting worse after a 1-0 loss at Tottenham. The fortunes of England’s two most successful teams could hardly be more contrasting. Victory for Liverpool saw the club restore its seven-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the table and move ever closer to equaling Man United’s record haul of 20 league crowns. Liverpool had to withstand a fightback from Wolves, which included a brilliant long-range goal from Matheus Cunha. First-half strikes from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah, pictured, secured the win for Arne Slot’s team, but an unconvincing performance after the break saw the home team fail to register a single shot on target as Wolves dominated the chances. “Obviously 2-0 at halftime, we know that can be one of the most dangerous results in football. We had to come out and we had to start well – and we didn’t quite do that,” Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson said.
UCLA, SC, Texas, ND in top spots
UCLA, South Carolina, Texas and Notre Dame would be the No. 1 seeds in the women’s NCAA Tournament if it began now. The NCAA basketball selection committee on Sunday did its first reveal of the teams in line for the top 16 seeds. “We were pretty certain as a group that we had the right four on the one line,” NCAA women’s basketball selection committee chair Derita Dawkins told The Associated Press in a phone interview. Just outside the top four teams were Southern California and LSU. The Trojans handed UCLA its first loss of the season on Thursday. The top 16 seeds in the 68-team field will host first- and second-round games, with the regional rounds being played at two neutral sites for the third straight year. Spokane, Washington, will host half of the Sweet 16 and Birmingham, Alabama, will host the other eight teams. UCLA and Notre Dame were projected as the top seeds in the Spokane Regional, with South Carolina and Texas in Birmingham. The Bruins were the overall No. 1 seed, meaning they would potentially have the Friday-Sunday games on the second weekend, allowing them an extra day of rest before the Final Four. There were six SEC schools in the top 16. —Asssociated Press
