Early morning Garden Exchange and workshop

Stop by the Garden Exchange for some fresh gardening inspiration for spring. Join the garden community for this month’s garden exchange and workshop, starting at 8 a.m. Saturday in the parking lot of Santa Cruz Live Oak Grange, 1900 17th Ave. Park in the northern rows of the parking lot away from the building.

This is the ideal time to prepare your garden for a vibrant spring bloom. Gardeners are welcome to bring seeds, bulbs, succulents, houseplants, veggies, fresh flowers, informational material or any garden-related items to trade within the garden community. You do not need to bring something in order to participate and you must take back anything not given out. Spread the word and tell your friends. Bring your questions, ideas and enthusiasm — and don’t forget to check out the Garden Exchange workshop “All Things Propagated” by educator, horticulturist and landscape designer Linda Beatham, right after at 9 a.m.

Rare Plant Swap event

The Santa Cruz Rare Plant Swap is happening in person from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Anna Jean Cummings County Park, 461 Soquel San Jose Road. Add new plants to your indoor or outdoor collection and meet other local collectors. There will also be a raffle with two prize possibilities. This plant swap is a buy, sell, trade and hangout event. No need to bring anything, just come and meet other local collectors in the Santa Cruz area. You are welcome to bring rare/uncommon plants, cuttings, corms, nodes, any plant accessories like pots, leca, soil additives or freebies.

Be sure to bring a bag or container to hold all your new plants/items. Please remember to keep it to rare/uncommon plants only. Santa Cruz County Parks volunteer events posted

Community volunteer days are a fun way to be with others and beautify our parks and beaches! Volunteer days include fun activities such as painting, weeding, fence building, beautification, invasive plant removal and more. May 5 will see Park Beautification at Felton Discovery County Park at 6121 Gushee St., Felton. May 10, check out Pitch In All-County Cleanup Day at Pinto Lake County Park at 757 Green Valley Road, Watsonville. On May 17 and 31, Floral County Park, 656 38th Ave., Live Oak, will host a workshop on creating a native pollinator garden. May 18 will be Beautification Day at East Cliff Drive County Parkway in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz Bonsai Kai and the Santa Cruz Orchid Society are teaming up for a joint show and sale May 3, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and May 4, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event takes place at the former Sears location in Capitola Mall, 1855 41st Ave.

This two-in-one event will feature more than 60 exquisite bonsai displays, along with orchids, educational exhibits, vendors, kids’ activities and raffle prizes. Experts will be on hand to offer advice and answer questions, and admission is free. Don’t miss this fun, family-friendly celebration of nature and artistry.

Neighborhood garden tours to benefit local church

Gardens for Peace Tour will be taking place 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 10. Tour five gardens around Santa Cruz featuring different styles: New Zealand, townhome patio, downtown Victorian, roses, and mini orchard and woodland. Each location includes complimentary refreshments and a surprise. Admission is $50 for individuals or $120 for a car full. Proceeds will benefit the Peace United Church of Christ, an open, affirming and inclusive community at 900 High St.

Beekeepers guild monthly meeting held midweek

Join the Santa Cruz Beekeepers Guild monthly meeting May 7 from 7-9 p.m. at the El Rio Mobile Home Park Community Room at 2120 N. Pacific Ave., held the first Wednesday of each month.

This month distinguished guest speaker Melanie Kirby will share insights from her work with the Adaptive Bee Breeders Alliance. Learn about innovative approaches to bee breeding that help create resilient, locally adapted honey bee populations.

Whether you’re an experienced beekeeper or simply curious about bee breeding, this presentation will offer valuable insights into the future of sustainable beekeeping. All interested in beekeeping are welcome and bring your questions.

Please remember to not park inside the mobile home park or along the fence at Lenz Arts. Usage of the Lenz Arts lot is allowed. Metered street parking is also available.
