Three state legislators will face primary election challengers in districts that include parts of Luzerne County, according to candidate petitions filed by Tuesday’s deadline.
State Sen. Lisa Baker, a Lehman Twp. Republican who has represented the 20th state Senate District since 2006, will face a challenge from Tyler Meyers, a behavioral specialist from Sugar Notch, in GOP primary on May 19.
State Sen. Marty Flynn, a Dunmore Democrat who has represented the 22nd state Senate District since 2021, is running against Jeffrey Lake, a special education aide from Clarks Summit, in the Democratic primary.
State Rep. Jamie Walsh, a Ross Twp. Republican running for a second term as representative of the 117th House District, will face Bill Jones, a Dorrance Twp. resident, in the GOP primary. Jones served as president and CEO of the United Way of Wyoming Valley for 12 years and stepped down from the position in 2024.
Two other primary contests have multiple candidates competing in a legislative district that includes parts of Luzerne County. Luzerne County Councilwoman Joanna Bryn Smith, a Wyoming resident, and Fern Leard, a Dallas Twp. resident, are competing in the Democratic primary for the 120th state House District, which is represented by Dallas Twp. Republican Brenda Pugh.
Two Democrats from Wilkes-Barre — City Councilwoman Jessica McClay and Michael Stadulis — are running in the Democratic primary for the 121st District, which is represented by Wilkes-Barre Democrat Eddie Day Pashinski. The incumbent since 2006 plans to retire this year.
Wilkes-Barre Area School Board member Denise Thomas and Hanover Area School District administer Ann Marie Kochuba-Mantione announced they planned to run in the Democratic primary for the 121st District but didn’t file petitions.
