Newly hired Bishop Amat football coach Kory Minor has begun filling out his staff, including a coach with ties to the NFL and others who have played big-time college football.

Minor, who graduated from Bishop Amat in 1995 and played for Notre Dame and in the NFL, has named Don Shumpert as his offensive coordinator.

Shumpert, 32, was a wide receiver at Iowa and a graduate assistant coach there for two years. He has been a wide receiver and running backs coach in the NFL with the New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals, and most recently has been a personal training coach.

Shumpert replaces Sean Koelle, who is set to take over as the Lancers’ flag football coach.

“I started (coaching) at a high school in St. Louis (in 2015), so this is sort of returning to where it all started,” Shumpert said. “Bishop Amat has a rich tradition and I want to help these guys compete at a high level and become better men. And I really want to help Kory go back to his school where he was a great player and get back to the roots of when they had it going in the ’90s.”

Shumpert said he envisions on offense that moves fast.

“I would say an up-tempo, spread type,” Shumpert said. “It doesn’t mean we will be passing all the time, maybe a 60% pass and 40% run. But up-tempo, no huddle for sure.”

Shumpert said his experience in the NFL brings a unique quality.

“It’s great to bring the different level of experiences I have learned over the years,” Shumpert said. “I’ve seen about everything football can throw at you and coaching multiple positions has helped me a lot.”

Jason Harris, who graduated from Bishop Amat in 1994 and was an assistant with the Lancers under former coach Steve Hagerty a few years ago, is returning to be the running backs coach. Harris played college football at Washington.

Marcus Everett, a standout receiver at UCLA before graduating in 2008, has agreed to become Amat’s wide receivers coach, bringing even more college experience to Minor’s staff.

Mike DiFiori, a former Bishop Amat head coach who was the defensive coordinator last season, remains on staff and will be the linebackers coach.

Niko Johnson has been named special teams coach. Johnson was Cerritos College’s recruiting director and defensive analyst this past season.

Minor hopes to name his defensive coordinator and the rest of his staff next week.
