Los Gatos native and Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Hunter Bigge, who sustained multiple facial fractures in a terrifying accident last week, felt good enough over the weekend to visit his teammates at Steinbrenner Field.

Bigge, who attended Los Gatos High School, was carted off the field and taken to a hospital after being struck in the face by a 105.1 mph foul ball lined into the Tampa Bay dugout in the team’s game against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night.

Bigge was placed on a backboard and gave a thumbs up before being driven by ambulance to a nearby hospital for tests. He never lost consciousness and was able to converse with first responders, Rays manager Kevin Cash said.

Cash and Erik Neander, the Rays’ president of baseball operations, visited with Bigge in the hospital on Friday. Bigge’s wife, Casey, was also at the hospital as his parents took a flight to Tampa from San Francisco.

Bigge, though, was released from the hospital on Saturday and mlb.com reported that the 27-year-old right-hander later was at the ballpark during the team’s 8-3 win over the Detroit Tigers.

Still, the incident will not be forgotten easily.

Rays pitcher Ryan Pepiot said he was in the dugout near Bigge, who was on the 15-day injured list with a lat strain.

“You see the ball coming at you, and we all ducked. You could hear the contact it made and then see him fall backwards,” Pepiot told mlb.com. “I mean, honestly, like, I almost threw up. I’m not good with blood or anything like that. But just seeing that, just like how close it was, it was one of the scariest things I’ve ever seen.

“Just kind of really put some perspective, like, it’s bigger than the game. He was talking a couple seconds later. He’s like, ‘I’m OK, right? I’m OK?’ You have no idea. Game didn’t matter after that point. We could have (come) back and won, but it wouldn’t matter.”

After the accident, several Rays players moved behind some protective netting.

“You’re probably going to see that for a little bit,” Pepiot said. “I would assume we’re going to be hiding a little bit more. I just don’t want anything like that to happen ever again, so I would assume most people are gonna be hiding.”

Bigge, a 2015 graduate of Los Gatos High School, was selected in the 12th round of the 2019 MLB draft out of Harvard by the Chicago Cubs.

Bigge made his major league debut for the Cubs on July 9 last year and, along with Christopher Morel and minor leaguer Ty Johnson, was traded 19 days later to Tampa Bay for All-Star third baseman Isaac Paredes.

Bigge has a 2.51 ERA and one save in 32 career appearances, including one start. This season, he has a 2.40 ERA in 13 relief outings covering 15 innings.

Bigge was the Cal-Hi Sports’ Central Coast Section player of the year in 2015. He also lettered on the football and swimming teams and was a National Merit Commended Scholar.
