Aptos High’s girls tennis team suffered a narrow, 4-3 loss to Stevenson in Pebble Beach in the first round of the Central Coast Section Team Tournament on Tuesday.
The match was initially slated for Monday, but was postponed by rain.
The Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League champion Mariners (11-4) earned wins at No. 3 singles and No. 2 and 3 doubles.
Aptos’ Coral Collins beat Cici Li 7-5, 2-6, 10-7 in singles. The Mariners’ Aracely Ritchie and Gia Artista beat Sloane Escher and Claire Tight 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Neci Hoeptner and Julia Blevins beat Ashlyn Saxtona and Belle Wang 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3.Stevenson (17-4) earned singles wins from Tereza Kostkova, Lynn Fu, and Delara Gholami.
Kostkova beat Kiana Safari 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, Fu beat Aviana Andrews 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2, and Gholami beat Isabella Calderon 7-5, 6-3 at No. 4.
The Pirates’ Jessie Chen and Karen Baker beat Natalia Calderon and Charlotte Long 6-2, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles.
Pro baseball
Bobo signs with Y’alls >> Santa Cruz’s Brendan Bobo, 6-foot-2, 214-pound first baseman out of Harbor High, signed a contract to compete for the Florence Y’alls of the Frontier League on Nov. 6. The independent baseball team is located in Kentucky.
Bobo transferred from Cal State Fullerton to Loyola Marymount University for his senior season in 2024, and batted .317 (63 for 199) with 26 extra-base hits, including 12 home runs, 58 RBI and 52 runs scored. He also stole 16 bases.
Despite his stellar campaign, which earned him all-West Coast Conference second-team honors, he went unselected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft in June.
Women’s basketball
At Cabrillo 107, Contra Costa 45 >> Freshman forward Gabby Brooks scored 17 points and sophomore forward Renee Parker scored 16, as the Seahawks jumped out to a 31-7 lead and rolled to their second straight nonconference win Tuesday.
Freshman guard Faith Esquer scored 15 points for the Seahawks, and freshman forward Jess Berry scored 12. Sophomore forward Haley Ortega and freshman guard Sydney Chesnut each scored 10 points.
Cabrillo (2-2) plays at Diablo Valley (0-2) on Saturday on 3 p.m.
Men’s soccer
Cabrillo 1, at San Francisco 1 >> Yoan Ponio scored the equalizer in the 56th minute, and the Seahawks earned a draw in their Coast Conference North Division match Tuesday.
It was Ponio’s 14th goal of the season, the second highest total in the conference behind San Francisco’s Xavier Alexander Eld.
Eld scored his 16th goal of the season for the Rams (11-6-1, 6-5-1) in the fourth minute.
Cabrillo (6-8-4, 4-6-2) closes the regular season at Foothill (8-8-5) in a conference crossover match on Friday at 1 p.m.
Girls golf
NorCal Regional Championships >> Scotts Valley’s Ashley Gettleman helped Stevenson of Pebble Beach advance from the CIF NorCal Regional Championships at Berkeley Country Club in El Cerrito on Tuesday.
Gettleman, a two-time SCCAL champion, shot a 6-over-par 78, and the Pirates, the Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division champions, qualified for the CIF State Championships for the first time in 17 years.
Valley Christian (389) won the NorCal title. Stevenson (394) took second, and Granite Bay (402) took third.
The state championship takes place at San Gabriel Country Club on Wednesday.
Track and field
Grand Slam Track >> The inaugural Grand Slam Track season will open at National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica, on April 4-6. Olympic distance runners Nikki Hiltz, an Aptos native, is among several star athletes who have signed on with the promotion.
Men’s basketball
At UC Santa Cruz 95, George Fox 87 >> Andrew Ferrara-Jones made seven 3-points and scored 32 points to lead the Banana Slugs to the victory at the West Field House on Monday. He also had four rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
UCSC trailed by one point midway through the second half, but outscored their opponent 32-23 over the final 9:37.
Zino Okah had 17 points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals for UCSC. Joseph Espy and reserve Zach Granberry each had 12 points and seven rebounds.
Senior guard Momo Stokes had 25 points, five rebounds, and four assists to lead the Bruins (1-2).
UCSC (2-1) hosts Pomona-Pitzer (1-0) at the West Field House on Friday at 7 p.m.
Youth soccer
State Cup Tournament >> Santa Cruz City Youth Soccer Club’s Sharks 2015 Blue team won the Gold 6 Division of the NorCal Premier State Cup Tournament on Saturday.
The Sharks defeated Greenhaven Soccer Club 15B 6-2 in the championship game at the Davis Legacy Soccer Complex.
It’s the second year in a row that the Sharks 2015 Blue team has won a State Cup trophy. It won the Bronze Cup last season. Players include: Nathaniel Ow, Zachary Ow, Sami Minquoy, Kellan Coonerty, Bennet Smith, Adrian Plicanic, Sterling Quilici, Dirk Ryono, Owen Muhr, Maximo Blietz, and Lucas Crick.
