Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid tenure got off to a disappointing start as the Spanish giant was held to a 1-1 draw by Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal in a Group H game in Miami Gardens, Florida, at the FIFA Club World Cup on Wednesday.

In his first game as coach of the 15-time European champion, Alonso was denied victory when Federico Valverde’s stoppage-time penalty kick was saved by Yassine Bounou.

The VAR-awarded spot kick looked like it would hand Madrid a reprieve after being pushed by Al Hilal under its new coach, Simone Inzaghi.

“We know that things take time.” Alsnso said. “We know that some things need to change. I saw a good reaction in the second half. We need good results here because it is a tough competition, but everything takes time.”

Gonzalo Garcia scored for Madrid in the 34th minute, but Al Hilal equalized from the penalty spot seven minutes later when Ruben Neves stepped up and sent Thibaut Courtois the wrong way.

While it was an underwhelming start for Alonso, Inzaghi’s Al Hilal made an early statement of its potential by holding its own against Madrid.

Had star striker Aleksandar Mitrovic been fit and available, Al Hilal could have been celebrating a win.

“We put in a good performance against Real Madrid, which is one of the strongest teams in the world.” Inzaghi said. “Arabic football is getting better and better year in, year out. The infrastructure they are building, the organization they’ve got, I’ve really found a great club and they are giving me everything I asked of them.”

FC Salzburg 2, CF Pachuca 1: Karim Onisiwo scored a tiebreaking goal in the 76th minute to lead FC Salzburg over CF Pachuca in Cincinnati.

The win put Salzburg atop of Group H.

Oscar Gloukhscored in the 42nd minute to give Salzburg a 1-0 lead before the game was delayed more than an hour after the start of the second half due to lightning in the area. When play resumed, Pachuca tied it on a goal by Bryan Gonzalez barely a minute after play resumed.

Manchester City 2, Wydad 0: Phil Foden scored two minutes into the match and later had an assist to lead the Premier League powerhouse to victory in Philadelphia.

City broke Wydad’s five-man defensive line early when Foden scored on a deflected cross by goalkeeper El Mehdi Benabid.

Jeremy Doku doubled City’s lead in the 42nd minute off a corner kick from Foden.

Manchester City leads Group G.

Juventus 5, Al Ain 0: Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceição each scored two goals and Juventus won its Group G opener with a win big in Washington.

The 36-time Italian champions opened the scoring at the 11th minute when a center from defender Alberto Costa assisted Kolo Muani’s header.

Ten minutes later, Conceição dribbled the ball inside the penalty box and made it 2-0.

Kenan Yildiz scored into the lower left corner in the 31st minute and Kolo Muani’s second goal four minutes into first-half stoppage time put Juventus up 4-0 at halftime.

Conceição scored again from a center-field kick in the 58th minute.

Al Ain, from the United Srab Emirates, will face a tougher challenge against current Club World Cup champions and Group G favorites Manchester City in Atlanta on Sunday.
