Cora Adomou had a season to remember for the Marshall girls soccer team, leading the CIF Southern Section with 54 goals, and helping her team win the Mission Valley League title and advance to the CIF-SS Division 7 championship game.
Adomou, who was named the Mission Valley League most valuable player, also has been selected this publication’s San Gabriel Valley player of the year.
The senior’s performance during the playoffs was nothing short of heroic. Adomou scored all 11 of Marshall’s goals during their five-game playoff run to the championship.
“It’s been a joy to see her take her space this year,” Marshall coach Stephanie Romero said. “Since freshman year we would talk about her potential she had if she just took her space and played with more confidence. To see her come in this year and do just that and more was just so fun.”
During the Eagles’ playoff run, Adomou scored a hat-track in their 3-0 victory over Nuview Bridge to open the Division 7 playoffs. After scoring twice against Oakwood (2-1) and Riverside Prep (2-0) to reach the semifinals, Adoumou scored twice again in a 2-1 semifinal victory over Rim of the World.
In the championship game against Vista del Lago, Adomou did all she could scoring twice, but the Eagles came up short in a 3-2 loss in the finals.
DAVE CHRISTENSEN, La Mirada
When the La Mirada girls soccer team came up short in a penalty-shootout loss to Sage Hill in the CIF-SS Division 4 championship game, longtime Matadores coach Dave Christensen reminded his team afterward to wipe their tears away, because the season was not finished. Perseverance paid off. La Mirada (16-9-3) returned for the CIF State Southern California Division IV regional playoffs and won two games to advance to the championship. The Matadores earned a rematch with Sage Hill in the title game, but this time, La Mirada came away with the championship after a 1-0 victory. It was the Matadores’ second regional title, also having won in 2016. For his efforts, Christensen has been named this publication’s San Gabriel Valley girl soccer coach of the year.
