Thursday night was a win-win for the Marin Catholic High girls basketball team.
The third-seeded Wildcats took care of business on their own end by beating No. 6 Menlo School of Atherton 46-36 in Kentfield and then got more good news when No. 7 Moreau Catholic (24-8) upset No. 2 Shasta 42-37 in another NorCal Division III quarterfinal giving the Wildcats another game on their homecourt at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“We’ve exceeded expectations,” MC coach Kayden Korst said. “We’re having so much fun and we don’t want this to end. We’re just going to have to find a way to combat Moreau Catholic’s athleticism. They get up and pressure the ball, but I love our chances with this team. These girls deserve all the love and support for another home game.”
If MC can beat Moreau Catholic, it might mean a rematch with Justin-Siena if the Braves can find a way to beat top-seeded Immanuel on Saturday in Reedley.
The Wildcats beat Justin-Siena on Saturday to claim their four consecutive North Coast Section title.
Against Menlo (19-9), MC trailed after the game’s first possession when Knights’ leading scorer Ruiqi Liu was fouled and hit both free throws. Liu led her squad with 16 points. Karen Xin was the only other Knight to finish in double digits with 10 points. The Wildcats (23-11) went on a 12-0 run and closed out the first quarter with a 17-4 lead.
Cecelia Biernat and Brooke Spagnuolo keyed the first-quarter run by hitting back-to-back 3-pointers and Izzy McFadden made all of her six points on layups.
Spagnuolo’s second and final 3-pointer gave MC a 15-4 advantage. She finished with eight points.
McFadden found the range from outside during the second period when she hit a pair of threes to help the Wildcats take a 29-14 lead into the locker room.
McFadden hit four 3-pointers on the night in finishing with a game-high 22 points.
While the Wildcats were able to hit from the outside, the Knights couldn’t match them.
They couldn’t find the range from behind the arc and managed just one 3-pointer until they had back-to-back 3s late in the game to cut MC’s lead to 13 with 2 ½ minutes remaining in the contest.
“We knew they had some players who liked to shoot threes,” said Biernat, who had five of her seven points in the first quarter. “Our plan was to try and run them off the 3-point line and I think we did a pretty good job of that. We’ve definitely improved over the season playing against a zone. We practice the 1-3-1 every day in practice.”
It also didn’t hurt to get some support from the boys lacrosse team.
“We were really excited they came out and supported us,” Biernat said. “We’ve got some friends on the team so it was really awesome to have that fan base today. Definitely motivated us to go out there and play a little harder.”
Back-to-back 3-pointers from McFadden and Spagnuolo’s layup gave the Wildcats their biggest lead at 37-16 with 5:30 left in the third quarter.
“During our playoff run we’ve had so much focus in every game and played so much importance on defense and rebounding that really has carried onto our offense,” said Jocelyn Gigounas, who had all of her seven points in the second half. “We’ve scored a lot in transition and are able to get offensive rebounds. We’ve been so focused I think we’ve finally found our groove together as a team.”
