Despite losing sole ownership of the regular-season title, Saint Mary’s will enter the West Coast Conference tournament this week as the No. 1 seed.
The Gaels, whose 77-68 loss at Gonzaga on Saturday night left both teams at 14-2, won the tiebreaker determined by the NCAA Evaluation Tool. Based on a complex series of factors, Saint Mary’s (24-6) ranks seventh in NET; Gonzaga (24-5) is ninth.
As the top two seeds in the conference tournament, both receive a triple-bye and won’t play until next Monday. The tournament opens Thursday in Las Vegas.
Saint Mary’s shot at an outright WCC title was denied Saturday night in Washington by the Bulldogs, who have now won or shared the conference title in 11 straight seasons. Drew Timme scored 19 points for Gonzaga which avenged a loss to the Gaels earlier this month in Moraga.
Logan Johnson led the Gaels with 27 points Saturday. Leading scorer Aidan Mahaney was held to nine points.
Santa Clara is the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Broncos (23-8, 11-5), riding a seven-game winning streak, have a double-bye and won’t play until Saturday.
Loyola Marymount is the No. 4 seed, followed by BYU and San Francisco, both 7-9 in the league. The Dons were in a three-way tie — Pacific also finished 7-9 — but lost the No. 5 seed to BYU on NET. The two teams were even after 10 tiebreakers.
