The Redlands Symphony Orchestra will present “Big Band Holiday,” a concert of jazzy takes on holiday tunes, 7:30 p.m. today in Memorial Chapel on the University of Redlands campus, 1200 E. Colton Ave.
Guest conductor Gregory Robbins will lead a 17-piece ensemble, and the concert features guest vocalist Sara Gazarek.
The program includes “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” “Jingle Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman,” “Mele Kalikimaka,” “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” and Duke Ellington’s arrangement of “The Nutcracker” Overture, among others, according to the symphony’s website.
Guest conductor Gregory Robbins, who directs the orchestral programs at Ball State University, received a 2022 Grammy nomination in the category of Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album, conducting the New York City-based big band Assembly of Shadows, according to the Redlands Symphony’s website.
Guest vocalist Sara Gazarek, based in Los Angels, tours internationally as a soloist and band leader and as a co-founder of the vocal collective säje, whose debut album earned a Grammy Award for Best Arrangement, Instruments and Vocals. She is a 2023 Chamber Music of America New Jazz Works grant recipient and serves on the Los Angeles Chapter board of governors for the Recording Academy.
