SAN JOSE — A mixed-use development of homes, offices and shops could sprout near downtown San Jose on a site that would place the project between two BART stops proposed for the Santa Clara Street area.
Documents on file with the city’s Planning Department show that the project would be at 644 E. Santa Clara St., next to South 14th Street. It would be located between a BART station that’s planned for the vicinity of First and Santa Clara Street and another known as the 28th Street/Little Portugal station.
The mixed-use project would feature three primary components, plans show. They include 50 units of housing on the second through sixth floors, 7,200 square feet of retail space on the ground floor and 7,100 square feet of offices on the first and second floors.
The new building would include one level of underground parking to provide 60 to 62 automobile parking spaces and 21 motorcycle spaces, according to the proposal. It also would include multiple amenities, planning files show.
“The project provides both private and shared outdoor open space in decks and rooftop areas,” according to city documents.
An affiliate linked to a San Jose-based individual named Li Ding owns the property, county and state public documents show.
In 2018, the affiliate paid $3.5 million to buy the property, according to documents on file with the Santa Clara County recorder’s office.
Office building
Currently, the site is occupied by an office building that totals 13,700 square feet. The two-story building was constructed in 1946, according to commercial real estate database Property Shark. If approved, the building would be demolished, San Jose planning files show.
City officials are seeking public input regarding any undue environmental impacts that the project might cause.
