The game turned on a 9-0 second-half run that flipped a four-point deficit into a 59-54 advantage with 8:21 left, paving the way to the Gaels’ 14th straight road win, the longest active streak away from home in the NCAA.

Santa Clara 74, Saint Mary’s 67 (OT) >> Holding Saint Mary’s scoreless for the final two and a half minutes of regulation, Santa Clara overcame a seven-point deficit to force overtime and outscored the Gaels (11-8, 7-3 WCC) 13-6 in the extra period to earn a comeback win Saturday night.
Maia Jones scored a game-high 23 points for the Gaels (11-8, 7-3 WCC), but their last bucket came with 2:30 remaining to put them ahead 61-54. Pulling ahead for good in overtime, the Broncos avenged an overtime loss to Saint Mary’s in December. Prior to their past two meetings, the regional rivals had played overtime once in 42 matchups since 2001.
Baseball
Alonso going, going, gone >> The first Amazin’ Day fan fest at Citi Field did not bring with it a dramatic resolution to Pete Alonso’s free agent saga — but did seem to confirm the New York Mets’ most popular and prolific power hitter is likely to sign elsewhere as spring training nears.
“We’ve made a significant offer to Pete,” Mets owner Steve Cohen explained during a fireside chat with President of Baseball Operations David Stearns and manager Carlos Mendoza. “This has been an exhausting conversation and negotiation.
“Soto was tough,” Cohen said, referring to talks that ended with New York signing star slugger Juan Soto to a record $765 million, 15-year deal last month. “This is worse.”
No ruling out Bregman reunion >> The door to re-signing free agent Alex Bregman is “cracked” open for Houston, but keeping the third baseman with the Astros might still be a long shot, general manager Dana Brown said Saturday.
Speaking at the team’s fanfest, Brown said the club and its longtime third baseman had “some conversations,” adding that they were “positive,” before he was asked if that means the door for re-signing Bregman remains open.
“I would say it’s cracked,” he said. “... The interesting thing is when we made some trades and some moves this offseason, we never realized that Bregman would still be on the market at this time.”
Blackmon goes from field to front office >> Charlie Blackmon retired this winter after 14 seasons, but the Rockies’ bearded outfielder is staying involved with the organization he called home for the entirety of his career.
The sparkplug centerfielder was announced as a special assistant to general manager Bill Schmidt, in which he will lend a hand in all facets of baseball operations but will start out on a part-time basis and work out of his Atlanta-area home. Initially, he’ll focus on scouting and player development, two areas that have long intrigued the former pitcher-turned-outfielder.
“It’s really great to have the opportunity to continue to be involved with the organization and the game,” Blackmon said. “I’m super excited, and I’m sure the Rockies are happy to have me around a little bit.”

Malinin soars to third title >> In another stunning display of athleticism, reigning world champion Ilia Malinin landed six of his seven planned quad jumps — including the quad axel, the jump that only Malinin has ever landed in competition — and finished with 333.31 points after his free skate to win his third consecutive national championship at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Wichita, Kansas.
Andrew Torgashev landed a pair of quads during his free skate and finished second with 286.49 points, while Camden Pulkinen took advantage of a sloppy free skate from Jimmy Ma to secure the bronze medal with 252.92 points.
