The Colorado girls basketball season draws closer to the finish line with the quarterfinal rounds of the Class 6A, 5A and 4A state tournaments all locked in and loaded. Those tournaments will all take place next week at the Denver Coliseum, beginning Thursday.

Some teams, like Mead and Holy Family, made their way past second-round opponents with relative ease Friday night. Joining them was Monarch, after the Coyotes defended their home court once again.

A recap of Friday’s games:

Class 6A

Monarch 54, Ralston Valley 48: The fourth-seeded Coyotes fought off a late comeback attempt by the Mustangs to advance into the 6A quarterfinals. Monarch opened up with a 21-15 lead after the first quarter, and by halftime, the Coyotes stretched their lead to 13 at 32-19. That lead held for the third quarter, but the Mustangs gained ground in the fourth, eventually cutting the lead to single digits with under four minutes to play. It was too little too late, as the Coyotes, led by seniors Amelia Rosin (14 points), Arezo Safi (13), and Natalie Guanella (13) secured the victory.

5A

Windsor 62, Centaurus 33: No. 13 Centaurus, despite a competitive first quarter, could not hang with the Wizards of Windsor. After the opening quarter ended 11-10 in favor of the Wizards, the half ended with Windsor leading by 10, 23-13. From that point on, it was a struggle for the Warriors to score the ball. In finishing the season 16-9, Centaurus’ leading scorers were seniors Laura Gensert and Ann Spence, each with six points.

Canon City 46, Frederick 39: A tightly contested affair took place between the No. 11 Tigers and the No. 27 Golden Eagles. Frederick eventually forced overtime, but it was the hosts who dominated the overtime session to make the Great 8 round. FHS finished the season with a 13-12 record.

Mead 79, Vista PEAK Prep 53: Mead won every quarter in its win over the Bison, including a 25-10 second quarter that really put separation between the squads. In improving to 20-5, Mead was led by an impressive 29 points from Kyra Haan.

4A

University 34, Jefferson Academy 15: No. 3 versus No.19 played out like a matchup between two teams on opposite ends of the bracket. The University Bulldogs jumped to an 11-3 lead to open the game and a 15-8 halftime advantage. The Jaguars, which finished the season 15-10, could not muster much offense during the game after averaging almost 42 points a contest through the season.

Holy Family 41, The Classical Academy 25: The Tigers have now allowed just 20 and 25 points in two playoff games. Fiona Snashall’s six blocked shots against the Titans certainly had something to do with that.

Eaton 47, Peak to Peak 46: Eaton’s Leyah Scott ended the Pumas season single-handedly — yes, you can say that when it’s an overtime buzzer-beater that gives victory to one team while snatching it from another. Alexandra Eschmeyer scored 31 points in her season finale, but most of this Pumas team could be back next year.
