Readers respond to Question of the Week: Are any of the candidates for governor resonating?

Gubernatorial candidates

In all honesty, I don’t know much about the candidates from either side. I guess I gave up on following California politics since one party controls it. I will say this. Anybody but Harris. Because I know about her from national politics, I can say that she has no stance on issues, no agenda, and because of that, does no interviews to explain herself.

The Democrats will win regardless of who they put up, both for governor and the Legislature and California will continue its present, downhill direction. Which begs the question: What’s the current flight from California, 54%?

Steve Hilton 2026

There is a need for a political course correction in California after six years of governorship by an egotistical lifelong politician. Steve Hilton is clearly an underdog. He was raised by his mom after his dad left the family when he was 5 years old, giving him insight into life in poverty. While working for British Prime Minister David Cameron, he gained his political experience as a director of strategy. Steve is a proponent of populism and puts people first over politics. There is something about his charisma, political knowledge and common-sense ideas that will stir up the ire of most lifelong politicians.

Antonio Villaraigosa

I am supporting former California Assembly Speaker and Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in his race for governor of California. Mayor Villaraigosa is able to point to a record of enormous accomplishments. I will name three. First, on his watch, the crime rate in Los Angeles was cut almost in half. Second, in some very tough budget years, he increased the department by almost 1,000 new officers to bring the Los Angeles Police Department to 10,000 officers. And third, he did what no other mayor has done: took major steps to improve our failing Los Angeles schools; during his tenure graduation rates rose from 45% to 70%. I back Mr. Villaraigosa for another reason — he is deeply committed to serving the people of California as governor of the most populous state in the nation. He will bring to the office of governor the same drive and commitment that made him a great public servant.
