Kole Calhoun’s towering three-run homer capped Cleveland’s five-run seventh inning as the Guardians rallied for an 8-3 win on Tuesday night over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers, who lost for just the third time in August.
Calhoun, who was acquired earlier this month in a trade from the NL West leaders for cash, connected off reliever Caleb Ferguson as the Guardians came from behind to stun baseball’s hottest team.
The Dodgers are 17-3 in August.
Oscar Gonzalez also homered for the Guardians, who trailed 3-2 entering the seventh after being held to six hits over 6 1/3 innings by Dodgers rookie starter Bobby Miller (7-3).
nATIONALS 2, YANKEES 1 >> New York extended a losing streak to nine for the first time in 41 years when Tommy Kahnle allowed a go-ahead homer to CJ Abrams with two outs in the eighth inning in a loss to Washington at Yankee Stadium.
Winless since beating the Marlins on Aug. 11 in Miami, the Yankees are on their first nine-game skid since Sept. 13-21, 1982 — the final month of a 79-win season.
Abrams snapped a 1-1 tie by hitting a first-pitch changeup from Kahnle (1-2) off the right field foul pole.
Ben Rortvedt homered and had both hits for the Yankees, who were held to two hits for the fifth time this year.
BLUE JAYS 6, ORIOLES 3, 10 INNINGS >> Brandon Belt homered on Mike Baumann’s first pitch in the 10th with Bo Bichette aboard, Daulton Varsho hit a two-run home run in the second and Toronto won at Baltimore.
The loss ended the Orioles’ three-game winning streak and cut their lead in the AL East over second-place Tampa Bay to two games.
RAYS 12, ROCKIES 4 >> Rookie shortstop Osleivis Basabe hit a grand slam for his first major league homer, capping off a nine-run eighth inning for AL wild card-leading Tampa Bay in a home win over Colorado.
WHITE SOX FIRE EVP, GM >> The Chicago White Sox fired executive vice president Ken Williams and general manager Rick Hahn, cutting ties with their leadership on the baseball side amid another disappointing season.
Williams was in his 11th season in his position after serving as the club’s general manager for 12 seasons. Hahn had been the GM since October 2012.
The White Sox had a 49-76 record heading into Tuesday’s game against the Mariners.
RAYS’ FRANCO ON LEAVE >> Wander Franco was placed on administrative leave indefinitely by Major League Baseball while authorities in the Dominican Republic investigate the Rays shortstop for an alleged relationship with a minor.
The 22-year-old will be paid and receive service time while on leave under an agreement with the players’ association that did not set a timetable for a decision on whether he will be disciplined by MLB.
Franco was placed on the restricted list for a week on Aug. 14 while MLB launched an investigation following social media posts suggesting he was in a relationship with a minor.
