MIAMI >> Bryson Stott hit a three-run homer, Ranger Suárez pitched seven effective innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Wednesday night.
Suárez (6-1) permitted one run and four hits in another solid performance since his return from an early season back injury. He struck out eight and walked two.
The veteran left-hander has only allowed eight runs since giving up seven in his first start of the season on May 4.
Stott capped Philadelphia’s four-run fourth inning against Adam Mazur (0-1) with his fifth homer of the season. J.T. Realmuto hit an RBI single before Stott drove a first-pitch fastball deep to center.
Mazur struck out five and allowed five hits in 5 2/3 innings in his Marlins debut. He was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville.
The Marlins closed to 4-2 in the ninth on Dane Myers’ one-out RBI single. They had a runner in scoring position before Matt Strahm struck out Connor Norby and got Nick Fortes to fly out for his fourth save.
Alec Bohm singled twice and doubled for Philadelphia in his second multihit outing of the series and sixth in his last nine games overall.
Nick Castellanos doubled and singled in his return to Philadelphia’s lineup after being benched the day before for making “an inappropriate comment” when he was pulled for a defensive replacement on Monday.
Norby hit a solo shot off Suárez that went 415 feet to center to make it 4-1 in the fifth.
Blue Jays 8, Diamondbacks 1 >> Bo Bichette had a home run among his three hits, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. reached base five times and drove in three and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-1 on Wednesday night.
Addison Barger had three hits and a walk, and left-hander Eric Lauer (3-1) pitched five innings to help Toronto improve to 24-13 at home.
Guerrero walked in his first three plate appearances, including an intentional pass in the third. He hit a two-run double in the sixth and singled home a run in the seventh.
Arizona arrived in Toronto having won five of six but lost its third straight, its longest skid since losing three in a row in late May.
Diamondbacks left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (2-4) allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in 4 2/3 innings, his first losing decision since April 29 against the Mets.
Bichette, who hit a tying home run in the ninth inning Tuesday in a 5-4 victory, connected for the second straight at-bat when he lined Rodriguez’s second pitch 418 feet to left.
It was Bichette’s third career leadoff home run, two of which have come this season. He has 10 homers this season.
Arizona’s Corbin Carroll stayed in to run the bases after being hit on the hand by a pitch in the top of the eighth, but exited in the bottom half. Alek Thomas took Carroll’s spot in the lineup.
Braves 5, Mets 0 >> Chris Sale went 8 2/3 innings just missing his first shutout since 2019, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Matt Olson hit home runs, and the Atlanta Braves handed the New York Mets their season-high fifth straight loss, 5-0 on Wednesday night.
Sale (5-4) allowed five hits and one walk. He struck out seven and did not allow a runner past second base. He threw 116 pitches before giving way to Raisel Iglesias, who got a groundout to end the game.
Sale has given up four runs in his last 41 2/3 innings for a 0.86 ERA in his last six starts.
Olson hit his 15th home run of the season in the seventh inning. Ozzie Albies was 2 for 3 with a double and a triple. Albies was hit in the right knee with a pitch while swinging at a third strike and went down for a few moments in the sixth inning, but stayed in the game.
Mets second baseman Jeff McNeil was 1 for 3 and extended his on-base streak to 20 games, the longest in the majors. Paul Blackburn (0-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on four hits with two walks in 3 2/3 innings.
Cardinals-White Sox game postponed because of rain
CHICAGO >> The St. Louis Cardinals’ game at the Chicago White Sox was postponed because of persistent rain on Wednesday.
It was rescheduled for Thursday afternoon as part of a straight doubleheader.
Erick Fedde will pitch for St. Louis in the first game, and Michael McGreevy will start for the Cardinals in the series finale. Sean Burke and Mike Vasil will take the mound for Chicago.
Fedde is looking for his first win since May 9. He was traded by Chicago to St. Louis as part of a three-team deal in July 2024 that also included the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Cardinals are 5-10 in June. They beat the last-place White Sox 12-2 in the series opener on Tuesday night.
Chicago has dropped six in a row and seven of eight overall.
