The Sacramento Kings have made another move ahead of Thursday’s NBA trade deadline, acquiring Jonas Valanciunas in a deal with the Washington Wizards.
A league source told The Sacramento Bee the Kings are trading newly acquired Sidy Cissoko and two-second round draft picks to the Wizards in exchange for Valanciunas, a 6-foot-11, 265-pound center who will backup Lithuanian countryman Domantas Sabonis.
“He’s tough,” Sabonis, who played with Valanciunas on the Lithuanian national team, said after the Kings beat the Wizards 123-100 on Jan. 19. “He’s really tough. He’s a great player. He’s been like a big brother to me and a mentor since I’ve been in the league.”
Valanciunas, 32, is averaging 11.5 points and 8.2 rebounds in his 13th NBA season. He has appeared in 49 games this season, serving primarily as a backup after starting 82 games for the New Orleans Pelicans last season.
Valanciunas is in the first year of a three-year, $30.3 million contract. He is owed $9.9 million this season, $10.4 million next season and $10 million in 2026-27.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks reported the Kings are using most of their $12.8 million non-taxpayer mid-level exception to absorb Valanciunas’ contract. Sources told ESPN the Kings are sending Washington a 2028 Denver Nuggets second-round pick (if 34-60) and their own 2029 second-round pick.
The Kings acquired Cissoko and the second-round pick from Denver as part of the three-team trade that sent De’Aaron Fox to the San Antonio Spurs while bringing Zach LaVine to Sacramento.
The Toronto Raptors selected Valanciunas with the No. 5 pick in the 2011 NBA draft. Valanciunas spent seven season with the Raptors, six of them with Kings forward DeMar DeRozan.
