The Steelers thought they settled their quarterback competition when coach Mike Tomlin anointed Russell Wilson the starter for Sunday’s opener in Atlanta.
Turns out, maybe not.
The Steelers listed Wilson as “questionable” for Week 1 after the 35-year-old aggravated a calf injury in practice on Thursday, potentially opening the door for Justin Fields to get the nod against the Falcons.
Neither player offered any hints at the plan, with both saying they are preparing as if they will play.
Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase said he will be a game-time decision for Sunday’s season opener against the Patriots amid what he called an “aggravating” contract dispute. Chase broke his silence Friday and said he would be willing to play this season even if the two sides cannot agree to an extension. But whether he plays on Sunday will be up to him. Chase isn’t the only Bengals wide receiver who could be out Sunday. Tee Higgins has been listed as doubtful after he suffered a hamstring injury Thursday. ... Hours before their self-imposed deadline, the Steelers secured tight end Pat Freiermuth with a four-year, $48.4 million deal, his agency, Athletes First, confirmed to ESPN. ... All-Pro CB Jalen Ramsey and the Dolphins agreed on a three-year, $72.3 million contract extension. The deal will pay Ramsey $24.1 million per year and make him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.
