When President Donald Trump hosts a rally Tuesday at Macomb Community College in Warren to celebrate his first 100 days in office, he’ll be joined onstage by some familiar faces.
Retired auto worker Brian Pannebecker will be seated behind the president, who is expected to be preceded at the podium by U.S. Reps. John James and Lisa McLain, along with other Republican officials from Macomb County.
Pannebecker, founder of a Facebook group, Auto Workers for Trump 2024, was among those invited by the president to speak about his new tariffs during a visit to the White House earlier this month. He has been a longtime and fervent supporter of the president.
He and about 100 active and retired members of the United Auto Workers will be seated behind Trump.
“This rally is important because outside of a few stops, he really hasn’t traveled much outside of Washington since being elected president again,” Pannebecker said Friday. “And it’s very significant that he chose Macomb County because Donald Trump made the auto industry one of his main focal points in introducing his tariff policy to get jobs back in the automotive industry.”
The White House has yet to disclose details for how the public can access tickets to Tuesday’s event, scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Sports & Expo Center on MCC’s south campus at 12 Mile and Hayes roads in Warren. Trump has appeared there before.
The rally is part of a swing through Michigan. The trip will be Trump’s first major rally since his inauguration in January and his first visit to the battleground state since he narrowly defeated Kamala Harris to win Michigan in November.
The Great Lakes State was among the battleground states Trump visited the most during the 2024 election cycle, tallying two dozen stops here, at least three of which were in Macomb County. He handily won the Republican-leaning county, defeating Harris by double digits. When Trump announced his tariffs program earlier this month, he invited Pannebecker to speak during the news conference.
“He understands this business a lot better than the economists, a lot better than anybody,” Trump said.
Pannebecker, a New Baltimore resident and Sterling Heights native, also spoke at a Trump rally last November and has organized many pro-Trump events in recent years.
“My message is: we support Trump’s agenda on tariffs and EVs 100% because it will bring auto plants back from south of the border and bring products back to Macomb County,” he said. “It’s not going to be easy and it’s not going to be pretty but it will get done.”
Trump is also expected to deliver an update on Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township. He has said in recent weeks that he was working with Michigan leaders to keep the military installation “open, strong, thriving” and hinted about the possibility of new fighter jets coming.
Earlier this month, Trump made reference to Selfridge as he was meeting with Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the Oval Office. Whitmer and other Michigan officials have long pushed for a new fighter mission to replace the outgoing A-10 squadron at Selfridge.
Trump is expected to fly into Selfridge for his rally in Warren. Authorities have not yet announced road closures and other restrictions anticipated to be put into place whenever a sitting president comes to the county.
