Tam High’s Ben Friedman shot an even 71 at Poppy Hills Golf Course to finish in a five-way tie for 12th place during Tuesday’s CIF State Boys Golf Championship in Pebble Beach.

Friedman, who was in the last group to tee off in the morning, had a rough time on the front nine, going 4-over par with four bogeys and a double-bogey. Friedman, an All-MCAL first-team selection, was one of eight players to double-bogey the difficult 432-yard, par 4 No. 3 hole.

But he birdied the 327-yard eighth hole and the 515-yard ninth hole, then came back with birdies on holes, 10, 11 and 12. Friedman birdied the 503-yard 18th hole to finish 4-under the back nine.

Teammate Hayden Thill, an All-MCAL second team pick, finished in a four-way tie for 37th at 5-over 76, despite a relatively consistent day, shooting par on 12 holes. Thill’s scorecard took a bump when he double-bogeyed the 558-yard No. 4 hole and shot a bogey on No. 5.

Friedman and Thill tied for 17th at 2-over 73 at the 2024 State Championships.

Jaden Soong of St. Francis shot a 9-under 62 to win the individual championship, followed by Torrey Pines’ Evan Liu at 7-under and Mater Dei’s Brayden Jones at 5-under. Stevenson won the team title with a combined 2-under 353. De La Salle and Santa Margarita tied for second at 7-over 362.
