You can chalk up Husan Longstreet’s first varsity start as a success.
The sophomore quarterback from Inglewood led the way to a 41-34 win over St. Bonaventure on Friday, throwing for five touchdowns. He completed 19 of 23 passes for 445 yards and no interceptions. He also rushed for 67 yards.
He admitted to having some butterflies early, but he wasn’t going to let that stop him.
“I think that’s natural,” he said. “I tried my best to use that as energy, like a control energy and focus to get into the game.
“It was our first time playing together and we had to gather ourselves and go out there and perform and give it our best. Our coaches always talk about effort; you give it your all and execute.”
Longstreet connected with Terrel Bradshaw on a 24-yard TD pass with 2:35 left for the winning score.
Bradshaw caught two TD passes, Caleb Harper, Jamari Johnson and Kamal Jabari all had one apiece.
Inglewood advanced to the CIF-SS Division 2 semifinal last season and is expected to be a team to watch in whichever division it is in this season.
“I feel real good about this team,” Longstreet said. “The coach ran a good camp. We had a chance to bond. We all come from a different background, but I feel real good about the team. Our goal is to win a state championship.”
San Pedro gives Walsh his first win
The game might have started late, but that wasn’t enough to stop San Pedro from handing new coach Corey Walsh his first win.
The Pirates defeated St. Anthony 33-14. Roman Sanchez had three rushing touchdowns.
“I’m excited, (but) it’s just another day,” Walsh said after the game. “A lot of people were asking me, ‘Is it special or is it new to you?’ Yes it’s special. I’m right where I want to be. In all reality, it’s just another day. I’ve been doing this for a long time. I’m fired up to be 1-0, but I’m just trying to be 1-0 every week.”

Early look at next week
Next week is officially Week 1, so we have the remaining schools kicking off the season. Those include Leuzinger, Lawndale, West and South Torrance, Redondo and Mira Costa.
It also means the next edition of Serra vs. Long Beach Poly. The teams met twice last season, Serra won both. In seven meetings, Serra has won six times. All seven games have been decided by eight points or fewer.
