British folk rock band Mumford and Sons will play their first local show in nearly a decade when they headline St. Paul’s Xcel Energy Center on Oct. 9.

Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. April 4 through Ticketmaster. British singer/songwriter Michael Kiwanuka will open.

Led by vocalist/guitarist Marcus Mumford, the band quietly released their debut album, “Sigh No More,” in late 2009. It earned comparisons to American acts like the Avett Brothers and Fleet Foxes and quickly found an audience in England and the States. It topped 3 million in sales and earned the group a pair of Grammy nominations.

The band’s follow-up, 2012’s “Babel,” was the first of three consecutive albums from Mumford and Sons to hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts. It also won a Grammy for album of the year and spawned radio hits with “I Will Wait,” “Lover of the Light” and “Whispers in the Dark.”

Founding member Winston Marshall left the group in 2021 after receiving criticism for praising “Unmasked: Inside Antifa’s Radical Plan to Destroy Democracy,” a book written by right-wing social media personality Andy Ngo. He has since started hosting a podcast for British conservative magazine The Spectator, which is owned by his father.

Friday, the remaining trio released their fifth album, “Rushmere,” their first record in nearly seven years. Band members have spent the past several years working on solo projects, including Mumford, who headlined St. Paul’s Palace Theatre in October 2022.
