Mark Dayton, who served two terms as Minnesota governor, launches his memoir “Perseverance” at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Minnesota History Center, 345 W. Kellogg Blvd., St. Paul, in conversation with journalist Lori Sturdevant followed by a book signing.
Dayton, born into the prominent family that owned department stores, had a career in politics that stretched from 1990 to 2019, including pivotal moments such as the 9/11 attacks, the Iraq war, and the economic recovery following the crash of 2008.
According to his publisher, Minnesota Historical Society Press, Dayton discusses in his book his life and career, from a challenging upbringing to his roles as state auditor, U.S. senator, and governorship, providing a look at leadership, public service and today’s political climate. He tells of his political awakening, his early life in politics and his friendship with Sen. Paul Wellstone. He discusses his mistakes as well as his successes.
From the book: “My path was never easy. I overcame formidable odds and strong opposition, even within my own party. My victories cost me my inherited financial fortune. But you know what? I don’t regret a cent of it. Those opportunities to make a difference in the world, to champion the causes I believe in, and to help create ‘A Better Minnesota’ were priceless.”
Admission to Saturday’s program is a $10 ticket price but it is pay-what-you can.
