This year’s Winter Carnival aims to truly be a St. Paul celebration.

Downtown’s Rice Park — cheekily renamed “Ice Park” — and the Landmark Center are still the heart of the Carnival, but more events are taking place in new locations across the city.

The King Boreas Grande Day Parade will proceed down Grand Avenue; a couple days of ice skating will be hosted at Springboard for the Arts up in Frogtown; and more cold-weather fun will take place at parks from Crosby Farm to Battle Creek.

The State Fairgrounds are also a growing Winter Carnival destination: The Vulcan Snow Park, as always, brings impressive art with the Minnesota State Snow Sculpting Competition. This year, the Winter Carnival and Vulcans are also partnering with Ice Castles, which takes place in several cities across the U.S., to bring ice slides, caverns, tunnels and — yes — an ice bar to the Fairgrounds. (In previous years, Ice Castles has popped up in Maple Grove and New Brighton.)

With more organizational partnerships helping to spread Winter Carnival events around town, there won’t be Carnival-sponsored warming tents nor regular live music in Rice Park, as in years past, said Winter Carnival CEO Lisa Jacobson. Rather, the Carnival and its partners are hoping you’ll visit and support neighborhood restaurants to eat, drink and be merry.

(Need ideas for where to go? The Carnival is hosting “Bingo Blitz” most days at various restaurants, and if you visit four games, you’ll be entered into additional prize drawings.)

Here’s a day-by-day rundown of our selection of Winter Carnival events to add to your calendars. If you want even more, you can find the entire schedule at wintercarnival.com/events.THURSDAY, JAN. 23
