Alana Vawter and NiJaree Canady combined for a one-hitter, and No. 9 seed Stanford defeated No. 5 seed Alabama 2-0 in a Women’s College World Series elimination game in Oklahoma City on Friday night.
Vawter allowed one hit in 5 1/3 innings. Canady stuck out three in 1 2/3 innings for the save.
Sydney Steele hit a solo homer in the seventh and knocked in both runs to help Stanford claim its first World Series win since 2004. The Cardinal (46-14) will play the loser of today’s Florida State-Washington matchup in an elimination game on Sunday.
Montana Fouts delivered a gutsy performance in the circle for Alabama (45-22). She wore a brace over the left knee she hyperextended during the Southeastern Conference tournament. The nation’s strikeout leader collected four more Ks while tossing a five-hitter.
Steele’s homer to left in the seventh set up Canady to close it out.
When asked about being pulled from the game, Vawter said she had zero problem with it. She nodded toward Canady and said, “She’s the best pitcher I’ve ever seen.”

Stanford 13, San Jose State 2 >> Alberto Rios hit a grand slam to ignite a six-run third inning and top-seeded Stanford breezed to a 13-2 victory over San Jose State at home Friday in the Stanford Regional.
It was the only hit of the game for Rios, but it erased a 2-1 deficit and gave the Cardinal (39-16), ranked eighth in the coaches poll, the lead for good.
Former Los Gatos High standout Tommy Troy had three hits for Stanford, raising his average to .401. He had a two-run homer in the fifth, an RBI single in the seventh and scored three runs. Leadoff batter and ex-Valley Christian star Eddie Park had three hits, including a solo homer in the first, driving in two runs and scoring four. Stanford’s No. 9 batter Owen Cobb had two hits, including an RBI double.
Quinn Mathews (8-4) earned the win in a start for the Cardinal. He allowed two runs on five hits and two walks, working seven innings with seven strikeouts.
Jack Colette singled in a pair to give the Spartans (31-26) a 2-1 lead in the top of the third. Jonathan Clark (4-5) started and took the loss, surrendering seven runs on five hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings.
Stanford will play today at 6 p.m. against the winner of Friday’s late game between No. 2-seed Texas A&M and No. 3 Cal State Fullerton. San Jose State will play an elimination game today at noon against the loser of that game.
Arkansas 13, Santa Clara 6 >> Santa Clara got out to an early lead on the road against No. 3-ranked Arkansas, but ultimately could not hold the Razorbacks down, losing 13-6 in the opening game of their NCAA regional in Fayetteville, Ark.
The Broncos scored two runs in the top of the first on an Efrain Manzo single and they held that lead as starter Cole Kitchen pitched three hitless innings to open the game. But Kitchen struggled with his command (four walks; 26 strikes on 59 pitches), so he gave way to a bullpen that gave up five runs and the lead in the fourth inning, capped by a three-run single by Arkansas’ Kendall Diggs.
