


On Veterans Day, Nov. 11, we honor the service and sacrifice of all of those who have served the country in war or peace and to thank them. This year, Nov. 11 falls on Monday, and many government offices will be closed. The following Veterans Day events are happening in Oakland County:
Birmingham
• The City of Birmingham’s annual public Veterans Day Wreath-Laying Ceremony, co-hosted by the Piety Hill Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is set for Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. in Shain Park. They will be honoring veterans and placing wreaths at the site of the Civil War and WW II monuments in Shain Park across from the Birmingham City Hall. The guest speaker is John Maten, president of the Michigan WWII Legacy Memorial in Royal Oak. The Flag Color Guard is from the Oakland Squadron, Civil Air Patrol Cadets. The bugler is Lynn Popa, a DAR member from the Ezra Parker Chapter, Royal Oak. The bagpiper is Frank Stasa, and the soloist is Samantha Stafford. Bloomfield Community Television is broadcasting the event. A reception for veterans follows the ceremony in the Baldwin Public Library, Rotary Room downstairs. Clarkston/Independence Twp.
• Independence Twp. Senior Center to host Veterans Day luncheon for local veterans and their spouses, at 11:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 8, at 8047 Ortonville Road. Free for veterans and spouses. Additional meals $7. Pre-registration required by Nov. 1, at 248-625-8231.
Clawson
• The Clawson Senior Center to host a Veterans Days celebration on Thursday, Nov. 7, at noon. served at Clawson Senior Center senior dining room, 509 Fisher Court, Clawson. The Clawson Public Schools Band will perform. Free public event. All ages welcome. Lunch is free to veterans. Confirm that you are a veteran when ordering. Farmington/Farmington Hills
• The City of Farmington Hills Special Services Adults 50 & Better Division to host its annual Veterans Day luncheon and ceremony to honor local veterans on Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m., at the Costick Activities Center, 28600 W. Eleven Mile Road in Farmington Hills. This is the 28th year for the celebration. The event will include an honor guard ceremony presented by the VFW and the American Legion, a recitation of veterans’ names, and a special luncheon. All local veterans and their guests are welcome to attend the luncheon, which is open to adults of all ages. Complimentary admission is offered to veterans who live in the cities of Farmington Hills and Farmington. Tickets for non-veterans are $12 for residents and $15 for non-residents. Registration is open through Monday, Nov. 4. Space is limited and walk-ins will not be accepted. • The Ferndale Memorial Association hosts its annual Veteran’s Day Observance at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, at the Memorial Mall, on Livernois, just south of W. Nine Mile Road with reception following, at the Ferndale Fire Dept., 1635 Livernois.
Holly
• Great Lakes National Cemetery to host a Veterans Day Ceremony to honor all who have served at 11 a.m. Nov. 11, at 4200 Belford Road, Holly Township. The ceremony will feature patriotic music and wreath presentations and presentation of the colors, rifle salute and Taps. Oakland County
• Oakland County is participating in Operation Greenlight by displaying green lights on the Oakland County Circuit Court Building, starting at approximately 5 p.m. Nov. 9. It will remain green in the evening and overnight hours until dawn on Nov. 13. The National Association of Counties and the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers invite the nation’s 3,069 counties, parishes, and boroughs to join Operation Green Light and show support for veterans by lighting buildings green for Veterans Day. By shining a green light, county governments and residents will let veterans know that they are seen, appreciated, and supported, www.naco.org.
Oakland County Parks and Recreation Appreciation Days offer free park entry on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, with access to natural areas, trails, dog parks and all park amenities. For information, visit www.oakgov.com/community/oakland-county-parks/events/-npage-2.
Oakland Twp.
• The Veterans Tribute of Oakland Township to host a Veterans Day Ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 10, from 1 to 2 p.m., at 5236 Adams Road, Oakland Township. This ceremony will be a celebration of military service to honor the service of our nation’s veterans — past, present and future. The ceremony will include remarks from the board about the history of Veterans Day and military service, and remarks from guest speakers including Michigan State Representative Josh Schriver. Outdoor seating, covered in the case of poor weather, plus cider and/or coffee and donuts will be provided. The event is open to the public. Orion Township

Ortonville
• Ortonville VFW Post 582 will have the 4th annual Ruck Sack Walk to raise funds to help veterans and families in need at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Bearss Fitness, 4 N. Ortonville Road.

Rochester
• Oakland University’s Veterans Appreciation Week is Nov.11 to Nov. 14. Royal Oak
• The Royal Oak Veterans Events Committee (RO VEC) will host its annual Ruck 22 March on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m. at Centennial Commons, corner of Third and Troy Streets, Royal Oak. Registration fees have been waived by the Royal Oak Veterans Events Committee to encourage participation and the collection of non-perishable food/personal items for veterans in need. All food will go to the Vietnam Veterans of America 154 food pantry. • The Southfield Veterans Commission would like to honor any residents of Southfield or Lathrup Village who have served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces that would like to be recognized at this year’s Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 8, at 11 a.m. in the Council Chambers, 26000 Evergreen Road. Any veteran who would like to be recognized at the ceremony is requested to email communityrelations@cityofsouthfield.com with their name, branch of service, rank and any other service details or accolades that they would like included. • The City of Troy to host annual Veterans Day Ceremony at Troy Veterans Plaza, in front of City Hall, 500 W Big Beaver, Monday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m. to honor and remember the service of all United States Military Veterans. The program will include Raising of Colors, Rifle Salute and Taps by the Troy Police Honor Guard as well as the Laying of the Memorial Wreath at the Veterans Monument. Music will be provided by the Heritage Concert Band of Troy. The public is invited to bring individual flowers, bouquets, small flags, and other appropriate mementos to be placed on the walk of honor or at the base of the Veterans Memorial in honor of a loved one or all veterans. Waterford Twp.
• Waterford Recreation Center to host free Veterans Luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 14, at 5640 Williams Lake Road, Waterford Twp. Free to veterans, members $12, non-members $14. Veterans Day promotions
• True Rest Float Spa to host free float sessions for active-duty military members, reservists and/or veterans on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. Each flotation therapy session is 60-minutes.
