The city of Woodland and Brown Issues invites the community to the Annual Yolo Farmworkers Festival on Oct. 5 in Downtown Woodland from 5 to 9 p.m.

According to a city press release, organizers are aiming to continue honoring and celebrating the invaluable contributions of farmworkers throughout Yolo County and beyond with expanded outreach to farmworkers. Attendees will be able to enjoy various food and merchandise vendors, an enlarged kids’ zone with live art, classic lowriders and the introduction of a beer garden.

Throughout the evening, people will also be able to hear performances from Los Cadetes de Linares, Sonora Tropicana and Banda La Irresistible, along with the return of local singer Jimena Izquierdo and Grupo Doble S.

Residents are welcome to join in on a night of celebration honoring all farmworkers for their integral role in our food and agriculture industry.

Last year, the event welcomed over 3,000 attendees, allowing farmworkers and low-income families to connect with the necessary resources while also enjoying a break.

According to a 2021 Healthy Davis Together case study, Yolo County has approximately 7,000 agricultural workers, many of whom are migrant workers moving to the county each growing season and often lacking adequate health care and food security.

Brown Issues advisor for Cesar Chavez Community School Monica Aceves Robles helped organize the event last year and explained that the purpose was to honor and celebrate the farmworkers “who work hard to put food on our tables,” especially during the pandemic. She also explained that Brown Issues had created a scholarship program to help farmworkers’ children with higher education opportunities.
