




A man was fatally shot in downtown Long Beach on Saturday after a verbal dispute close to the area where the Grand Prix of Long Beach was taking place.
The shooting was reported about 5:50 p.m. near the 0 block of Cedar Walk, the Long Beach Police Department said.
That’s in the area of Seaside Way, which was temporarily closed for the investigation; Pacific Avenue and Ocean Boulevard.
Responding officers located a man suffering from gunshot wounds and paramedics transported him to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The identity of the victim was not immediately available and there was no information on a suspect or suspects.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim and a suspect(s) were engaged in a verbal dispute, which escalated when the suspect(s) shot the victim. Additional circumstances of the incident are currently under investigation,” police said in a statement Sunday.
Long Beach Police Department homicide detectives were investigating.
Grand Prix preliminary events, in the venue south and southeast of the shooting, were underway at the time of the shooting.
