FRISCO, Texas >> Colorado is about seven weeks away from the start of the 2025 football season, and head coach Deion Sanders isn’t sure who will line up at the most important position on the field.
He isn’t too worried, though, as the Buffaloes continue to let senior Kaidon Salter and freshman JuJu Lewis battle for the job. He also said he’s comfortable with a scenario in which both of them play.
“Yeah, as long as they’re doing their jobs and we’re winning,” Sanders said at Big 12 media days at The Star.
“We definitely want to continue to develop JuJu, but Kaidon is unbelievable. Kaidon is off the chain. He’s been there, done that. He can get the job done.”
Teams facing a battle in camp usually don’t bring a quarterback to media days. Five of the 16 Big 12 teams, in fact, didn’t bring a passer to Frisco. Sanders brought two.
Salter has been a full-time starter the past two years at Liberty. Lewis was a five-star recruit who graduated 1 1/2 years early from high school to join the Buffs.
“We brought both of them because I don’t know which one’s gonna start,” he said. “I wouldn’t have brought (Salter) here if I didn’t trust him, but JuJu is coming on round the mountain when he comes. And I love him. I love what he brings to the table.
“I don’t know how it’s gonna play out, as long as it plays out. We can’t lose either way with either of those two.”
More experience on the way?
Led by Sanders, a star cornerback who is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, the Buffs’ coaching staff is loaded with NFL experience. That includes fellow Hall of Famers Marshall Faulk (running backs coach) and Warren Sapp (defensive line assistant).
The group has 160 years of NFL experience, but more could be on the way. Sanders said that former NFL quarterback Byron Leftwich and longtime NFL coach Mike Zimmer could be joining the staff soon.
“With those two added it’s 204 years of NFL experience, and I want those years,” Sanders said.
Leftwich played in the NFL from 2003-12, and then coached in the league from 2016-22, most recently as the offensive coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2019-22.
Zimmer has long been a mentor for Sanders, as he was Sanders’ position coach with the Dallas Cowboys from 1995-99.
Zimmer has more than 45 years of coaching experience, including last season as the defensive coordinator of the Cowboys. He was also head coach of the Minnesota Vikings from 2014-21 and worked for Sanders as an analyst in 2022 at Jackson State.
In the spotlight
Sanders was the headliner, but the five players CU brought to Frisco — Lewis and Salter, as well as offensive lineman Jordan Seaton, cornerback DJ McKinney and kicker Alejandro Mata — also got a lot of attention from media Wednesday.
“I talked to all of them and asked how their experience was, and especially for a guy like JuJu, who’s young — he’s a freshman, would be a senior in high school if he stayed — and he’s here interviewing with all these different media outlets, and they’re having a great experience,” CU athletic director Rick George said. “That’s what you hope for.”
Sanders brought his usual flair, as well, to the stage.
“It’s great to see that and coach brought a lot of energy to the stage today and that’s what you expect,” George said.
