Around the country, the NCAA transfer portal has been flooded since it opened March 25.

On Wednesday, two more players from Colorado joined the list. Sophomore Ayianna Johnson, a 6-foot-3 forward, and Erin Powell, a 6-foot wing, put their names into the transfer portal after spending one season with the Buffaloes.

Johnson, who transferred from Minnesota last summer, averaged 5.0 points and 2.1 rebounds in 31 games for the Buffs, all off the bench.

Johnson had a roller-coaster year for the Buffs. She was one of only four players on the team to score at least 20 points in multiple games — she had a career-high 20 against Houston on Feb. 15 and matched that with 20 at Oklahoma State on Feb. 22 — but she scored three points or less in 17 of her 31 games.

Johnson also struggled to get on the court at times. She averaged 9.9 minutes per game and played five minutes or less eight times, including each of the last four games of the season.

Powell, from Hampshire, England, averaged 2.1 points and 2.1 rebounds in 19 games. She played sparingly for the Buffs until injuries piled up in mid-February. Powell posted a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds) in a win against Houston on Feb. 15, and then had seven points and six rebounds four days later in a loss to Baylor.

After the Baylor game, though, Powell averaged just 8.1 minutes over the next seven games and didn’t get off the bench in the Buffs’ season-ending loss to Gonzaga on March 23 in the WBIT.

CU has lost four players to the portal, as freshmen Lova Lagerlid and Grace Oliver put their names in last week. Of the 14 players on the roster this year, only four are now slated to return. CU has lost six players to graduation.

Currently, there are nine players on the 2025-26 roster, including five incoming freshmen.

That leaves six open scholarships for head coach JR Payne and her staff to work with this offseason, although Payne has filled all 15 scholarship spots just twice in her previous nine seasons in Boulder.

The Buffs, who signed six transfers last summer, are likely to add players through the transfer portal. There are more than 1,100 players in the portal.

“Every coach in America is active in the portal. You have to be,” Payne said after the Buffs’ season-ending loss to Gonzaga in the WBIT on March 23. “It’s become the busiest time of the year for coaches.”
