


UC Santa Cruz’s Eric Anderson and Elena Stanciu advanced from the prelims to the finals on the opening day of the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships at Nazareth University in Rochester, New York, on Friday.
Anderson, a senior out of Folsom, took first in Heat 2 of the men’s mile race and was ninth overall in 4:12.89 to advance to Saturday’s 10-runner final. He passed five runners over the final 200 meters.
State University of New York Brockport senior Jonathan Zavala (4:10.50) posted the fastest time in the prelims.
Stanciu, a sophomore out of Washington, D.C., took fifth in Heat. 2 of the women’s mile race in a personal-record and program-best 4:56.35. She finished ninth overall to advance to Saturday’s 10-runner final. She ran in sixth at the midway point, dropped five spots, and made up two spots over the final 200.
Vassar sophomore Haley Schoenegge (4:53.82) posted the fastest time in the prelims.
Surfing
SCSSL Awards >> The Santa Cruz Scholastic Surf League honored its season champions and top performers for the 2024-25 season.
Santa Cruz won the team title and was followed by Soquel, Aptos, Half Moon Bay, Harbor, Saint Ignatius, Marin/TAM, and Santa Cruz Mountain schools in the standings.
Soquel’s James Daniel won the boys shortboard title. He was followed by Santa Cruz’s Olai Beckman Moon, Soquel’s Ryder Walding and Cooper Shank, HMB’s Dane Grochowski, and Santa Cruz’s Carson Grant in the standings.
Aptos’ Harper King won the boys longboard title. He was followed by Santa Cruz’s Grant, Aptos’ Noah Slezak and John Niswonger, HMB’s Oliver Ebinger, and Soquel’s Wyatt Dixon in the standings.
Santa Cruz’s Camille Cortazzo won the girls shortboard title. Aptos’ Isla Hardy, Santa Cruz’s Saga Espeland and three Soquel surfers, Kaikora “KK” Nauenberg, Zoey Howland, and Mary Henderson, rounded out the top six.
Santa Cruz’s Healey Skelton won the girls longboard title. Soquel’s Zoey Howland, Santa Cruz’s Elsa Espeland, HMB’s Aleia Keating Anderson, and Santa Cruz’s Cortazzo and Espeland rounded out the top six.
Men’s volleyball
UCSC 3, North Park 1 >> Riley Norman had 19 kills, and the No. 15 Banana Slugs won 25-23, 19-25, 25-22,25-12 in their second match Friday at Cal Lu Fornia Invitational at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks.
Dylan Foreman had nine kills and eight digs for UCSC, and Nico Espinoza had seven kills and six digs. Caio Valente made 44 assists and nine digs.
Gerald Malana had 13 kills to lead the Vikings (9-10) of Chicago.
UCSC (16-5) faces Illinois Tech (9-10) at Cal Lutheran on Saturday at noon.
UCSC 3, Marian 0 >> Nico Espinoza made 15 kills, and the No. 15 Banana Slugs won their Cal Lu Fornia Invitational opener 26-24, 25-22, 25-22 at Cal Lutheran in Thousand Oaks on Friday.
Riley Norman had 12 kills and eight digs for UCSC (15-5). Caio Valente had 35 assists and seven digs, and Ethan Makishima made five blocks.
Adrian Calderon had 13 kills for the Sabres (9-11).
Girls lacrosse
Scotts Valley 13, at Monterey 4 >> Senior Sofia Niklaus had five goals, four assists, 14 draw possessions, four draw controls, and seven caused turnovers in the Falcons’ win Friday.
Senior Skylar Dufour had three goals, six draw controls, and one assist for the Falcons. Senior Erin Szymanski scored three goals.
Senior goalie Claire Skinner made three saves, and freshman teammate Natalia Warner made two saves.
Women’s beach volleyball
Cabrillo earns DH sweep >> The Seahawks won their Coast Conference doubleheader, beating Monterey Peninsula 3-2 and Hartnell 4-1, at West Valley College in Saratoga on Friday.
