GLENDALE — Arcadia baseball coach Nick Lemas said even though his team wrapped up a Pacific League championship earlier this week, they weren’t going to take it easy against rival Crescenta Valley.
So Arcadia dug deep to score six runs in the top of the 10th inning and then hung on for a 6-4 win Friday night to finish league play.
Arcadia (24-2, 14-0), which is ranked 38th nationally by Baseball America, has won 11 games in a row. The team will close the regular season next week with nonleague games against La Mirada and Bonita. Then, it’ll be off to the CIF Southern Section playoffs, where Arcadia will likely end up in Division 1.
“I don’t really know what to say,” Lemas said after the extra-inning win that lasted 3 1/2 hours. “I’m happy we won. I’m not really happy with how we played. We didn’t play well. We didn’t execute well.”
The score was 0-0 after nine innings. Arcadia struggled all game offensively, finishing with just five hits, two of them coming in the 10th inning. However, good teams find ways to win when not playing at their best.
The six-run burst started after left fielder Tarik Reese was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. Keyonn Chatman was put in as a pinch runner and quickly stole second base. That was followed by a bunt by catcher Maverick Silva. Crescenta Valley pitcher Sam Sellars picked up the bunted ball and thew to third to try to get Chatman, who slid in safely under the tag.
Jodan Vogel was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Sellars was then taken out and replaced on the mound by Aiden Rose, who walked Leo Peniche and Julian Salmon. That pushed two runs across to give Arcadia a 2-0 lead.
Avery Truesdale smacked a double to deep left field that scored two more runs to put Arcadia up 4-0. The Apaches scored two more runs to take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the 10th.
Crescenta Valley (19-7, 10-4) refused to give up. It scored three runs to cut the lead to 6-3 with two outs and runners on first and third. Jimmy Spears hit a single to left field off pitcher Tyler Swilling to score Chris Torres and make it 6-4.
Brock Robeson was headed to third while Spears rounded first and headed to second. Chatman, who was in left field, threw the ball to Vogel at shortstop, and he saw Spears headed to second. He threw to second base, where Spears was tagged out to end the game.
Swilling got the win for Arcadia but the person who kept the Apaches in the game was starting pitcher Damian Catano. The junior left-hander pitched 8 1/3 scoreless innings and gave up only four hits.
“He’s looked as sharp as he’s looked all season,” Lemas said. “Moving into the postseason that’s what we want.”
Swilling entered in relief of Catano in the bottom of the ninth with one out and a Falcons runner on second. He got Torres to fly out to right field. That allowed Gunner Herman to tag and take third. Pinch hitter Dante Cerecedes was intentionally walked and Spears walked after that to load the bases. Swilling got catcher Jacob Mucic to hit a grounder to Vogel at shortstop and he tossed the ball to second for a forceout to end the inning.
No Arcadia player had more than one hit. The only Apache aside from Truesdale to get an extra-base hit was Salmon, who hit a one-out double in the fourth inning. He was left on third base though.
Lemas said he’s looking forward to Tuesday’s showdown at La Mirada (19-6, 10-2), which won the Gateway League. It could be a preview of a CIF-SS playoff matchup.
“That’ll be fun,” Lemas said. “Obviously, La Mirada is a very good team. I’m sure a lot of people want to watch that game, so it should be a good one.”
