THE WOODLANDS, Texas >> Haeran Ryu capped a front-nine run in the Chevron Championship with a chip-in birdie on the ninth hole, then held on in tricky wind conditions Saturday for a share of the third-round lead with Mao Saigo.

On a gusty, sunny day at The Club at Carlton Woods in the first women’s major tournament of the year, Ryu parred the final nine holes for a 4-under 68. Saigo followed with 69 to match Ryu at 9-under 207.

Ryu opened with a 65 on Thursday for share of the lead with Yan Liu, then shot a 74 to fall two strokes back. On Saturday, after a bogey on the third hole, she birdied No. 4 and ran off four straight on Nos. 6-9. The 24-year-old South Korean player has two LPGA Tour victories.

Novak, Griffin lead at Zurich Classic >> Andrew Novak and Ben Griffin shot an 11-under 61 in better-ball play to take a three-stroke lead into the final round of the Zurich Classic, the PGA Tour’s only team event.

Each chasing their first PGA Tour title, Novak and Griffin took a 27-under 189 total into the alternate-shot finale Sunday at TPC of Louisiana.

Novak is coming off a playoff loss last week to Justin Thomas in the RBC Heritage, his second straight top-three finish.

Baseball

Former Cardinals, Reds GM dies at 74 >> Walt Jocketty, a three-time baseball executive of the year and former general manager for both the St. Louis Cardinals and the Cincinnati Reds, has died. He was 74.

Jocketty died in the Phoenix area, former Cardinals manager Tony La Russa told the team after speaking with Jocketty’s wife Sue.

Jocketty had been battling health issues for the several years. The Cardinals won the National League Central Division seven times under Jocketty’s leadership.

Tennis

Djokovic loses opening matches in Madrid >> After losing a second straight opening match and three in a row overall, Novak Djokovic said he was facing a “new reality” in his two decades of pro tennis.

Djokovic’s public coming to terms with his rare losing streak came after he fell in straight sets to Matteo Arnaldi in his first match of the Madrid Open.

The 37-year-old Djokovic came to Spain after also losing his opener to Alejandro Tabilo at the Monte Carlo Masters two weeks ago and, before that, the Miami Open final.

Barcelona beats Real Madrid in extra time to win Copa del Rey final >> Barcelona beat Real Madrid 3-2 in extra time to claim a record-extending 32nd Copa del Rey title and launch its bid for a treble.

Pedri González scored from long range to give Barcelona the lead in the 28th minute at La Cartuja Stadium.

Kylian Mbappé came off the bench at halftime and scored from a free kick for Real Madrid in the 70th. Midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni headed Madid in front in the 77th.

Barcelona will carry this momentum into Wednesday’s start of its Champions League semifinal against Inter Milan. It also leads La Liga by four points over Madrid.

Wrexham promoted to Championship league >> Wrexham is one step from the Premier League.

The Welsh soccer team’s remarkable rise under celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney continued when it sealed promotion to English soccer’s second tier.

A 3-0 win against Charlton ensured Wrexham will go up as the third division runner-up behind champion Birmingham.

It means that from next season it will be playing one level below the Premier League — something that was unthinkable just four years ago when it was a struggling non-league team.

Horse racing
