The tournament will be played at the same time as the FIFA Club World Cup, which has been given priority for players by FIFA. Gold Cup matches will be played at 14 stadiums in 11 areas, avoiding the Eastern seaboard.
Mexico has won nine Gold Cups and the U.S. seven. Canada won in 2000.
HOCKEY
The United States proved its favorite status by shutting out the host Czech Republic 4-0 at the women’s ice hockey world championship in Ceske Budejovice.
Abbey Murphy led with two goals, Alex Carpenter had a goal and and assist, and captain Hilary Knight also scored to claim their second straight win in Group A.
Czech goalie Michaela Hesová had to face 48 shots while her U.S. counterpart Gwyneth Philips stopped 10 for the shutout.
“Our leaders paved the way for us,” Murphy said. “They’re a good, strong team over there. Give them a lot of credit for playing us pretty hard off the bat. But honestly, we just found our way. Putting pucks in the net, finishing off opportunities we’ve been getting all game. It was really cool, and the atmosphere was awesome.”
Knight, the all-time leading scorer at the worlds, improved her record to 67.
Earlier, defending champion Canada scored three goals in a span of 2:32 while beating Switzerland 4-0 for consecutive shutouts.
Michigan State junior forward Isaac Howard won the Hobey Baker award as college hockey’s top player.
Howard, 21, led the nation in averaging 1.41 points per game and became the Spartans’ first player to win the award since goalie Ryan Miller in 2001, and third overall. Howard is from Hudson, Wis., and was selected by Tampa Bay with the 31st pick in the 2022 draft.
Howard finished fifth in the nation this season with 52 points (26 goals, 26 assists) in 37 games while helping lead Michigan State to win the Big Ten regular-season and conference tournament titles.
NFL
A Texas man who says Titans cornerback L’Jarius Sneed or his personal assistant shot at him while he was sitting inside a Mercedes-Benz on a dealer lot in December is suing the two-time Super Bowl champ for at least $1 million.
Christian Nshimiyimana was sitting inside the Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon on Dec. 6 in Carrollton, Texas. Neither he nor anyone else was hit by bullets fired from a Lamborghini Urus driving past One Legacy Motors. Much of what happened is redacted in the police report obtained by The AP.
Attorney Levi McCathern said in a statement that Sneed and his accomplice were arrested by the Carrollton Police Department for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after the shooting but have yet to answer for it.
Joe Flacco is heading back to Cleveland. The veteran NFL quarterback agreed to terms with the Browns on a one-year deal. Flacco will have a base salary of $4 million but can earn more with incentives.
TENNIS
Carlos Alcaraz won from behind against Arthur Fils while defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas was bundled out in the Monte Carlo Masters quarterfinals in Monaco.
World No. 3 Alcaraz was five points from defeat in the second set, and 3-1 down in the deciding set, but pulled through 4-6, 7-5, 6-3.
Fils, playing his third straight Masters quarterfinals, let off Alcaraz no thanks to 53 unforced errors.
“I have missed clay,” Alcaraz said.
Preparing for his French Open title defense, he’s into his first Monte Carlo semifinals, an all-Spanish affair against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the 2022 runner-up. Davidovoich Fokina beat Alexei Popyrin 6-3, 6-2.
Tsitsipas couldn’t understand why it all went wrong against Lorenzo Musetti. The Monte Carlo champion in 2021, 2022 and 2024 had a 5-0 record against Musetti and took their first set 6-1.
But from that point Tsitsipas’ serve evaporated. He made less than half of his first serves, only eight of 28 in the last set. One of his seven double faults put him down 4-3 in the last set. Musetti won the last two sets 6-3, 6-4.
Musetti will face Alex de Minaur, who reached his first semifinals on clay in three years after drubbing Grigor Dimitrov 6-0, 6-0.
