Monterey Police Department officers responded shortly before 1 p.m. Thursday to a store at the Del Monte Shopping Center after a man entered a store and announced he had a firearm.

The center’s security had received a call that Carmel resident Sai Fernandez (50) had entered the business and announced he had a firearm. The call reported that although Fernandez was not threatening or brandishing the firearm, he was acting strangely.

Multiple officers responded and deployed a number of tactical tools to address the issue. Officers were able to call into the business and speak to an employee, who confirmed Fernandez was still inside and had what appeared to be a firearm in a holster.

Officers were able to evacuate the business and employees and customers were able to safely exit through a back door. While exiting, one customer told the officers that the firearm appeared to be fake.

Officers then approached the store and detained Fernandez, who had a black rubber imitation firearm in a drop leg style holster and a bullwhip tucked into the back of his waistband.

Fernandez told the officers he worked in private security and used the items for training purposes. Monterey Police Department officers noted his statements did not sound believable, as he claimed to work with U.S. military Special Forces and celebrities.

Fernandez was found to be on probation for a prior arrest on May 29 after he threatened his coworkers at his previous place of employment. His probation terms included a requirement that he not possess deadly weapons.

After searching his car, officers found a military style tactical vest, machete, large knife and hatchet in Fernandez’s possession. He was arrested for violating his probation and possessing deadly weapons.

Officers determined Fernandez did not display the imitation firearm in a threatening manner and the business’ employees and customers stated they didn’t feel threatened by Fernandez.
