Arkansas’ Gage Wood pitched the third no-hitter in College World Series history and first in 65 years on Monday, striking out a record 19 and never letting Murray State come close to getting a hit in the Razorbacks’ 3-0 victory.

Wood joined Jim Ehrler of Texas in 1950 and Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State in 1960 as the only pitchers to throw CWS no-hitters, and his defense was never really challenged as he dominated a Racers team that was making its first Omaha appearance.

The junior right-hander, who set the CWS record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game, was subdued in the aftermath.

Wood struck out Connor Cunningham and Jonathan Hogart to finish the game. He was mobbed by teammates, with the celebration moving from behind the mound to the area between second and third base.

Wood went to three-ball counts just twice, and 83 of his 119 pitches were strikes.

Steelers sign Elliott to new three-year contract

The Steelers have signed safety DeShon Elliott to a new three-year contract worth $15.5 million.

The Steelers now have both of their starting safeties under contract through the 2026 season.

Elliott, who was entering the final year of a two-year contract totaling $6 million, started 14 games and had 108 tackles. He also had an interception, two fumble recoveries and three forced fumbles.

Elliott found a home in the Steelers defense after bouncing around from team to team in his first five NFL seasons.

Chelsea tops Los Angeles FC in Club World Cup

Pedro Neto scored in the first half and Enzo Fernández in the 79th minute to give Chelsea a 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in Group D’s Club World Cup opener.

Chelsea put pressure on LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris early into the match. Neto found the breakthrough in the 34th minute, picking up a pass from Nicolas Jackson and cutting onto his left foot for a near-post finish.

LAFC almost got one back just before the 60-minute mark, but Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sánchez came up with an important save to keep Denis Bouanga from scoring.

Chestnut returning to July 4 hot dog contest

Competitive eater Joey “Jaws” Chestnut announced he will return to compete in this year’s Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest after skipping last year’s gastronomic battle for the coveted Mustard Belt.

It will mark the 20th appearance for the eater at the Coney Island contest.

Last year, Major League Eating event organizer George Shea said Chestnut, who has won the 10-minute eat-a-thon 16 times, would not be participating due to a contract dispute.

Chestnut had struck a deal with a competing brand, the plant-based meat company Impossible Foods.

Chestnut holds the world record of eating 76 hot dogs.
