A longtime public servant from Macomb County will be one of the speakers scheduled to participate in a Veterans Day Recognition Ceremony on this morning in the State Capitol.

State Sen. Veronica Klinefelt of Eastpointe will attend the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency’s veterans recognition event celebrating Michigan’s more than 516,000 veterans.

Now in it’s fifth year, the ceremony will include the presentation of colors by the Dewitt VFW Post 671 and a pinning of Vietnam-era veterans to officially honor them for their service to the country.

In addition to Klinefelt, other speakers include State Commander Kimberly Napoleon of the VFW Department of Michigan, Brig. Gen. Daniel Kramer, MVAA Director Brian L. Love and other state officials followed by a reception.

According to Michigan Senate Democrats, Klinefelt is a self-described proud “Army brat” who grew up on base watching her father, Ret. Major General William McLean, serve his country.

In addition to her father, her husband, brother, sister, and several other family members also served in the military. In the Michigan Senate, Klinefelt currently serves as chair of the Veterans and Emergency Services Committee, where she works to advance legislation to ensure veterans can receive the care, resources, and opportunities they deserve.

She has also served on the Eastpointe Board of Education, Eastpointe City Council, and Macomb County Board of Commissioners prior to being elected the state Senate.

Today’s ceremony will be held 9:30-11 a.m. at Heritage Hall, 323 W. Ottawa Street, in downtown Lansing.
