Davis Musical Theatre Company (DMTC) is excited to announce open auditions for its production of the romantic and tragic “Sunset Boulevard.”
Auditions will be held Sunday, June 22, and Monday, June 23, at 7:30 p.m. at the Jean Henderson Performing Arts Center, 607 Pena Dr., #10 in Davis. Callbacks will be held on Tuesday, June 24, at 7:30 p.m., at the same location.
Directed by Steve Isaacson, with musical direction by Kyle Jackson and choreography by Kelly Lynn Jordan, “Sunset Boulevard” is Andrew Lloyd Webber’s brilliant take on the 1950 movie, which is both haunting and desperately sad, Hollywood, 1949.
Forgotten silent film-era star Norma Desmond longs to return to the silver screen. Holed away in her decaying mansion on Sunset Boulevard, Desmond lures handsome, struggling screenwriter Joe Gillis into her orbit, seeking someone to pen a movie that will fulfill her fantasy of a big-screen comeback. Norma grandly sweeps down the stairs to the waiting police, declaring, “And now, Mr. DeMille, I’m ready for my close-up.”
Auditions are open for ALL roles. For a list and description of all characters and roles, visit dmtc.org/auditions.
Please bring a prepared song (not from “Sunset Boulevard”) and sheet music, with piano accompaniment (piano accompanist is provided). There will also be cold readings. The Davis Musical Theatre Company will also have open auditions for its special added production, “The Last Five Years.”
Auditions will be held on Wednesday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Jean Henderson Performing Arts Center. Callbacks will be held on Thursday, June 26 at 7:30 p.m., at the same location.
Directed by Jackson, with musical direction by Jacob Fennell, the show is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical about two New Yorkers in their twenties who fall in and out of love over the course of five years. The show’s unconventional structure consists of Cathy, the woman, telling her story backwards while Jamie, the man, tells his story chronologically; the two characters only meet once, at their wedding in the middle of the show.
Auditions are open for ALL roles. Please note that if you were also planning on auditioning for Sunset Boulevard at DMTC, you will be unable to participate in both shows. Please see character descriptions below.
Catherine (Cathy) Hiatt: The female lead—Mezzo Soprano (F3 — D#5 / Eb5) belter. Character arcs from an ambitious, fresh-faced girl in a new relationship to a woman stunned by a betrayal and a divorce that she is only beginning to understand. Cathy is the cast show off, as most of her songs are difficult to sing, and require a large vocal range. She can be seen as a clingy-jealous-girl (properly paranoid), a deadpan-snarker, a stepford-smiler, and a ‘never my fault’ girl, at different points in the show. The role requires a large emotional range and an actress willing to dive into the character’s complexities.
Jamie Wellerstein: The male lead—Tenor (A2 — A#4 / Bb4). Character arcs from an ambitious guy on a promising first date with a dazzling career to someone who is blinded by success and ego. He is very lovable, yet makes unintentional choices that sabotage his own happiness. Jamie is the other cast show off, and given that it’s a two person show, Jamie’s actor has songs that are over six minutes long, and the actor has to have a giant vocal range to play the part. Jamie can be seen as drowning in his romantic sorrows, in love with love, ‘it’s all about me’, a jackass, and an ambitious young writer at different points in the story. The role also requires a large emotional range and an actor willing to dive into the character’s emotional complexities.
Please bring a prepared song (not from “The Last Five Years”) and sheet music, with piano accompaniment (piano accompanist is provided). There will also be cold readings. The show opens Friday, July 18, and runs through Sunday, July 27. Shows on Fridays and Saturdays start at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday shows start at 2 p.m.
