Greenbrae, CA Carl Arvid Fredricksen, beloved family man, kind gentleman and long-time Marin County resident, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2024, at 95.

Born in Chicago to Norwegian immigrants, Liv and Carl, on April 1, 1929, his Scandinavian heritage was an important part of his identity. He spoke Norwegian and maintained deep connections to his family roots abroad for his entire life.

Carl attended St. Olaf College in Minnesota where he majored in business, excelled in team and individual sports, and met Dorothy Ann Holtan. Dorothy and Carl fell in love at school and spent summers together working at the Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone National Park. The couple married the day he graduated from St. Olaf in 1951 before moving to Chicago.

In Chicago, Carl began an illustrious 36-year career in investment banking for Goldman Sachs & Company, which moved him to three different cities over his time there. Following 16 years in the Chicago office, he was among the earliest group of Goldman executives who built the firm’s West Coast presence in Los Angeles and later in San Francisco. Carl retired as a Senior Vice President of Goldman in 1987.

Carl and Dorothy raised four children in La Cañada and Kentfield, CA. and were married for 49 years until Dorothy’s passing in 2000. He later found a loving companion in Patsy Guglielmo to whom he was married for 21 years.

Throughout his life, Carl’s passions for competition and faith helped him enjoy every day with a smile and a ceaseless and unwavering positive energy. In retirement and throughout his later years Carl was an early morning regular for rounds at his beloved Meadow Club typically followed by spirited games of cards and dominoes. From the earliest days of fatherhood, Carl actively imparted his love and teaching of sports to his children and grandchildren. Off the golf course he regularly hiked the hills of Marin County with his weekly hiking group and treasured his travels with family and friends in Hawaii, and throughout the world.

Wherever he resided, Carl was active in his local church community, particularly as a choir member and board member for many years with Christ the Victor Lutheran Church in Fairfax, CA. He also served as a member of the Board of Regents for California Lutheran College in Thousand Oaks.

Carl is survived by his children, Nancy Gordon, San Rafael, CA., Jim Fredricksen (Jane) of Mercer Island, WA.,Cully Fredricksen (Katie) of Novato, CA., and Kristin Sennett (Lawrence) San Rafael. His legacy continues through his five grandchildren, Clark Fredricksen (Jenny Lamb), Newton, MA., Anna Fredricksen, Seattle, Carl Sennett, Scottsdale, AZ, Austin Ray, New York, and Tucker Sennett, San Rafael, and two great-grandchildren, Bjorn and Magnus Fredricksen.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Carl’s memory to Wednesday’s Gift, a Marin County non-profit organization. His family would also like to acknowledge the loving support Carl received from the staff at The Tamalpais during the last several years of his life.
