SAN JOSE >> A fight between two men living in an unsanctioned assembly of backyard sheds ended with a weekend shooting that killed one and the arrest of the other a few hours later, authorities said.
The shooting was reported at 7:06 p.m. in the 700 block of Locust Street in the Washington-Guadalupe neighborhood. Police said responding officers found a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound.
He died from his injuries at the scene. The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner’s Office listed him as being 25 years old, but his name was not released Tuesday pending his formal identification and notification of his next of kin.
A public listing of the death from the coroner’s office states the victim was living in a shed set up in a backyard “that was sectioned into different sheds/units each with different tenants,” and that he was involved in a fight with another tenant. The clash escalated when the tenant used a handgun to shoot the victim multiple times in the torso, the coroner’s office wrote.
The coroner’s listing added that the handgun was not immediately recovered, and that there appeared to be no video recorded of the deadly confrontation.
An ensuing San Jose police investigation confirmed that the victim and alleged shooter knew each other, and formally identified a suspect. Around 3:25 a.m. Sunday, police served an arrest warrant at a home in South San Jose and arrested the man, who police did not name publicly as of Tuesday.
The killing marked the city’s fifth homicide of the year investigated by San Jose police. The city had recorded 10 homicides by the same point in 2024.
