The UC Santa Cruz men’s cross country team posted a perfect score (15) and took first place at the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championships at Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday.

Christopher Newport (47) took second and was followed by Salisbury (77) and Mary Washington (109).

UCSC had the top five finishers on the 8k course: junior Luke Holland (25:29.1), graduate student Graeme Maclean (25:54.0), and seniors Eric Anderson (26:00.2), Camden Hebert (26:01.4), and Benthan Vu (26:01.9).

The NCAA Division III West Regionals, hosted by Lewis & Clark College, take place at Milo McIver State Park in Estacada, Oregon, on Nov. 16.

Women’s cross country

UCSC wins C2C Championship >> The Banana Slugs posted a team score of 28 and took first place at the Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference Championships at Lee Hall Mansion in Newport News, Virginia, on Saturday.

Salisbury (45) took second and was followed by Christopher Newport (72) and Mary Washington (87).

UCSC had four runners finish the 6k course in the top eight: junior winner Helena Janku (22:10.8), senior Hanna Hekkanen (22:46.6) in fourth, freshman Sara Teitelbaum (23:02.3) in sixth, and freshman Jordan Robinson (23:30.4) in eighth. Sophomore Jordan Baden (23:32.0) took ninth and also scored for UCSC.

Men’s basketball

Mendocino 87, at Cabrillo 80 >> The Seahawks coughed up a 15-point lead in the second half and lost the season opener Friday in the Cabrillo Tip-Off Classic.

Cabrillo led 64-49 with 10 minutes remaining. “We couldn’t take care of the ball on offense or grab rebounds on the defensive end,” Seahawks coach James Page said.

Max Parmigiana made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points for the Seahawks, Teammate Dai’Shaun Buie scored 17 points.

Cabrillo (0-1) hosts San Joaquin Delta on Saturday at 5 p.m.

Surfing

La Marginal Surfing Pro >> Santa Cruz’s John Mel tied for 17th place overall at the World Surf League’s La Marginal Surfing Pro, a Qualifying Series 3,000-point event, on Saturday.

Mel was eliminated after placing third in Heat 4 of the Round of 32 with a two-wave total of 12.40 in 4- to 6-foot waves. He placed behind Ventura’s Dimitri Poulos (14.90) and Coast Rica’s Carlos Munoz (13.10) and ahead of San Diego’s Ryland Rubens (11.84).

Santa Cruz’s Sam Coffey (8.63) took fourth in Heat 16 of the Round of 64 and was eliminated. He tied for 49th place overall.

In the women’s competition, Santa Cruz’s Keanna Miller (7.50) took third in Heat 4 of the Round of 32 and was eliminated. She tied for 17th place overall.

Huntington Beach’s Olivia Storrer, a former Capitola resident, beat Coast Rica’s Rubiana Brownell 10.00-8.90 in the quarterfinals. She’ll face Barbados’ Chelsea Tuach in the semifinals when action resumes Sunday.

Men’s soccer

Cabrillo 3, Ohlone 0 >> Freshman forward Yoan Ponio scored twice, and the Seahawks won their Coast Conference North Division match Friday.

Sophomore forward Alex Silva also scored, and freshman forward Kaleb Plascencia and freshman midfielder Mathis Gaultier were credited with assists.

Goalies Carlos Bajaras and Angel Edgar each played a half and made two saves. Ohlone (1-12-3, 0-8-1) made six saves.

Cabrillo (6-6-3, 4-4-1) hosts Las Positas (9-6-3) in its final home match of the regular season on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Women’s volleyball

Cabrillo 3, at San Francisco 0 >> The Seahawks earned a 25-11, 25-18, 25-16 sweep in their Coast Conference North Division match Friday.

Cabrillo (9-16, 4-4) hosts division co-leader Hartnell (14-12, 7-1) on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

UCSC wins pair >> The Banana Slugs beat Mary Hardin-Baylor 23-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12 and St. Thomas 25-23, 25-21, 25-13 to open their four-match Texas road trip on Friday.

Senior opposite Ashley Magley made 16 kills and four aces against MHB. Teammate Kelly Ann Greene, a senior middle blocker, had 13 kills, five aces and four blocks. Freshman setter Margo Melgoza made 37 assists, and junior outside hitter Anna Hospodar made 15 digs.

Greene had 17 kills, three aces, and three blocks against St. Thomas. Melgoza had 38 assists and 15 digs, and Hospodar made 21 digs.

UCSC was scheduled to plays Le Tourneau and Hardin-Simmons on Saturday, after the Sentinel went to press.
