Mill Valley’s Ben Friedman tied for second in Monday’s U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier at Stanford Golf Course with a 4-under 66.

The four low scorers advance to the 77th U.S. Junior Amateur Championship at Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas, July 21-26.

Friedman was 3-under on the back nine and shot six birdies during the day. A week earlier, the Tam High standout tied for 12th at the CIF State Championship at Poppy Hills Golf Course. Rival Theo Anderson, the MCAL player of the year from Marin Catholic, tied for 12th at 2-over 72 on Monday.

The race for first place in the Pecos League Pacific Division could tighten up this week when the San Rafael Pacifics visit the second-place Martinez Sturgeon (10-5) on Wednesday. San Rafael (11-3) lost 7-3 Monday in the first of two road games at Bakersfield. The Pacifics wrapped up the set Tuesday night.
