Most Reverend Joseph M. Sartoris, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, passed away on June 27, 2025, in Culver City, California. He was 97 years old and leaves a rich legacy of service to the people of God through his priesthood and episcopacy.
“Bishop Joe” was ordained to the priesthood on May 30, 1953, and consecrated a bishop on March 19, 1994. He was admired for his deep spiritual life and he loved being a priest. He was always ready with a warm smile and generous service to all.
He is survived by his sister, Catherine Brammer, and nieces and nephews, Anne Hansen, Stephen Moloney, Mary Haggerty, John Moloney, Paul Burke and Peter Burke, and a large loving family. He is predeceased by his sisters, Madeleine Moloney and Margaret Burke.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday, July 18, 2025, at 10:00 am, at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, 555 West Temple St., Los Angeles, CA 90012. Live stream at olacathedral.org. A private entombment will immediately follow the Mass in the Cathedral Mausoleum for the immediate family and Bishops present.
