The No. 6 seed in the Northern Section Division III playoffs, Corning, came from behind to upset No. 3 seed Yreka 24-20 on Friday night in Yreka.

The Cardinals trailed 20-3 at halftime, trimmed the Miners’ lead to 20-10 after three quarters, then added two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to seal the victory.

On the Cardinals’ final TD that put them ahead 22-20, head coach John Studer opted to go for the 2-point conversion instead of kicking the extra point, which would have put the Cardinals ahead by three points and given the Miners an opportunity to tie the game with a field goal. The risk paid off, as the 2-point conversion was successful and the Miners could not come back and score.

Kaleb Flournoy led the Cardinals with 13 carries for 84 yards and two TDs, and Blake Ward had 13 carries for 88 yards and one TD. Gavin Dutra had 11 tackles on defense. Flournoy, Sergio Sanchez and Antonio Espinoza had one sack each.

Corning (5-6) advances to play No. 2 Orland (9-2) at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 in Orland.

Gridley 26, University Prep 10 >> The No. 5 seed in the NSCIF D-III playoffs, Gridley, went on the road and upset No. 4 U-Prep in Redding.

The Bulldogs led 13-10 at halftime, and outscored the Panthers 13-0 in the second half. No individual stats or scoring plays were reported.

Gridley (8-3) advances to face the No. 1 seed Lassen (8-3) at 7 p.m. Nov. 22 in Susanville.

Winters 48, Hamilton 0 >> The No. 1 seed in the NSCIF D-IV playoffs, Winters, stayed undefeated in its semifinal victory in Winters.

The Warriors (11-0) led 27-0 at halftime and outscored the Braves 21-0 in the second half. The Warriors passed for 114 yards, and rushed for 381 yards and seven TDs.

Hamilton ends its season 8-3 after a second-place finish in the Mid-Valley League.

East Nicolaus 40, Durham 28 >> The No. 2 seed in the NSCIF D-IV playoffs, East Nicolaus, used two fourth-quarter touchdowns to defeat the No. 3 seed Durham.

The Spartans led the Trojans 25-22 at halftime, but Durham took a 28-25 lead after a 48-yard TD pass from Perry Phillips to Coby Gausemel with 11 minutes remaining in the third quarter. That score remained until East Nicolaus scored with five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter and had a successful 2-point conversion to take a 33-28 lead. East Nicolaus’ Mason Taylor scored on an 18-yard rushing TD with three minutes remaining to increase the Spartans’ lead to 40-28 and seal the victory.

In the first half, Durham led 8-7 after a 2-yard rushing TD from Joshua Harding and a successful 2-point conversion, but East Nicolaus regained the lead off a fumble returned for a TD. Harding then rushed for a 51-yard TD to give the Trojans a 14-13 lead after the first quarter, but the Spartans passed for a TD early in the second quarter to regain the lead at 19-14. They then increased their lead to 25-14 on a rushing TD. Phillips completed a 5-yard TD pass to Jeremiah Badie with one minute until halftime, but the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful.

Durham ends its season 7-4 after a third-place finish in the Sacramento Valley League.

Weed 16, Biggs 14 >> The No. 8 seed in Division V playoffs, Weed, used a 16-point third quarter to upset No. 1 Biggs in Biggs.

The Wolverines led 8-0 at halftime after an 8-yard rushing TD by Skyler Long and a successful 2-point conversion rush by Long. Weed tied the game with 10 minutes left in the third quarter on a passing TD and successful a 2-point conversion pass, before taking a 16-8 lead on a rushing TD and 2-point conversion with two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Long then completed a 70-yard TD pass to Brady Smith with one minute remaining in the third quarter, but the Wolverines’ 2-point conversion attempt was unsuccessful, and Weed held its 16-14 lead for the remainder of the game.

Biggs ends its season 7-4 after a first-place finish in the Mid-Valley League.
