DETROIT >> The NHL Prospects Tournament in Traverse City essentially came to an end last year.
But there definitely isn’t anything on the docket this year at Center ICE Arena.
The Red Wings and Dallas Stars played two games with their top prospects and recent draft picks last year in Traverse City leading into Wings’ training camp.
But the Wings will be heading to Frisco, Texas, to play those two games this September, before the start of NHL training camp.
This has no impact on the Wings’ NHL training camp, which will continue at Center ICE Arena and begin in mid-September. Official dates and times will be released at some point this summer.
The Traverse City prospects tournament began in 1998. At its peak, there were eight teams competing, with teams playing four games in five days. Over 700 players who competed in the tournament played at least one NHL game, a testament to the competitiveness of the event.
But many organizations have aligned themselves in other tournaments, maybe a little closer to home or from a divisional standpoint or are concentrating on development camps, thereby placing all of the organization’s prospects at their home rink.
The Wings held their development camp for prospects and draft picks last week at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit.
