Former Redwood High standout Mia Hamant — the starting goalie for the University of Washington as a junior this past season — revealed Monday via social media that she was diagnosed with Stage 4 SMARCB1-deficient kidney cancer on April 11.
Hamant has been undergoing treatment since then and a GoFundMe has been set up to help support her and her family at https://gofund.me/90ad63b1.
Hamant was a four-year varsity starter in goal for Redwood from 2018 until 2022. Hamant was the MCAL’s all-league first team goalie in 2019 and 2021 and was named second team in 2022.
Hamant made 15 starts this past season for Washington, helping lead the Huskies into the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Hamant saved three penalty kicks in a shootout as the Huskies advanced to the Big Ten semifinals with a victory over Iowa.
