WEST COVINA — Give South Hills credit. It worked out of so many jams and made so many clutch plays during Wednesday’s Hacienda League game with Los Altos, it seemed that destiny was on its side.
Los Altos’ Hannah Vargas ended that thought.
Down to her last strike, Vargas belted a two-out, bases-clearing double in the seventh inning to break a tie and give the Conquerors a 4-1 victory.
South Hills had a chance to strike back, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Conquerors freshman pitcher Kaylahni Duenas got back-to-back flyouts to end the game.
It was a huge win for the Conquerors (15-8, 4-0), who remain undefeated in league after a two-game sweep of South Hills (14-7-1, 3-2).
South Hills center fielder Brianna Chavez threw out two runners at the plate, and Huskies starting pitcher Abigail Quintero kept the Huskies close with several clutch strikeouts when the Conquerors had runners in scoring position.
It looked as if the Huskies might get out of another jam in the seventh when Vargas came through.
“I don’t even know what to say. She’s (Vargas) been hitting well of late, and she just came through,” Los Altos coach Lydell McCullough said. “We couldn’t have asked for her to come through in a bigger moment than that.”
McCullough gave South Hills credit for making big plays, especially on Sanchez’s throw home in the fifth inning that caught Los Altos standout Brianah Alejandre, a UCLA commit, trying to score on a base hit in a 1-1 tie.
Alejandre had another great game, hitting her fifth home run and going 4 for 4 with three steals.
“We did a great job putting pressure on them,” McCullough said. “I was telling our assistant coach, it’s the first time in four years I’ve seen someone throw Bri out at home plate. I told Bri, ‘what am I going to do, not send you?’ Kudos to them, it was a great game.”
Vargas was humble afterward, talking about how it was a team victory. But she did give herself a moment to appreciate her big hit.
“There was a lot of mental stuff (going on), but it worked out in the end,” Vargas said of her bases-clearing double. “This is the biggest game in league for us, just winning it was one of our biggest accomplishments.”
Alejandre, led off with a homer to left for a 1-0 lead.
South Hills avoided what could have been a more disastrous first inning after the Conquerors followed with a hit and walk, and had runners on second and third with one out.
But Quintero got back-to-back strikeouts to escape.
Los Altos kept threatening, but South Hills wouldn’t bend.
Sanchez made a nice running catch in the second inning, and threw out Conquerors runner Melanie Vallin trying to take home from third for an inning-ending double play.
Quintero also got back- to-back strikeouts to end the third inning after Alejandre singled and stole second and third in the third inning.
Those plays were huge because South Hills tied the score in the the third.
After Charli Moreno tripled, she scored on a two-out throwing error when the Conquerors tried to throw out a runner stealing second, the ball sailing into center.
Chavez worked her magic again in the fifth when she threw out Alejandre at the plate.
